Toolbars (2003/SP3)

I have lost the ability to add a new toolbar to Word.
    Everything works through:

Tools > Customize

Toolbars tab

New

In the "New Toolbar" pane, Click "OK"
The "New Toolbar" pane disappears, but the toolbar does not appear in the list.

    Any thoughts will be appreciated.
    Regards
    Don

I don't have Word 2003 running but the first things that come to mind are
    - Did you give a name to the new toolbar? You didn't mention that step.
    - What template did you select as the context? I would guess that it should be one that is available after you click OK but perhaps it is being deactivated somehow between the after the OK click. Could it be that that template is locked/protected in some way.
    - What happens if you disable any addins before attempting this.

(Edited by wdwells on 10-Sep-08 07:43. "Macro1" changed to "Custom 1" as the default add-in name.)
Thank you for the response Andrew.
First I need to clarify that the machine in question is on one of my users', and neither of us has admin rights. Which may -- or not -- have some bearing on the situation.

< Did you give a name to the new toolbar? > Yes and No. Giving the bar a unique name produced the same results (nothing), as leaving the default "Custom 1" entry in the name box.

<What template did you select as the context?> Normal

<Could it be that that template is locked/protected in some way> We removed the Normal template from the Templates folder and had Word build a new one. This did not change the results.

<What happens if you disable any addins before attempting this.> We removed all files from the Startup folder and uninstalled an application which caused an entry to show up in the Add-Ins list; all to no avail.

Several re-installs were performed by the IT support team prior to my being notified.

Since we are without admin rights; I am currently waiting for the IT folks to go through the reconstructive activities provided by the Support template found here.
I will advise of any progress, and welcome any further thoughts.

If you can replace Normal, what result do you get if you put in another Normal template that has the toolbar already ie add the toolbar on another machine and transfer the file.

    Hi Andrew
Thank you for the response. Sorry it took so long to get back to you; but I was unable to get onto the problem machine until today. In the meantime, the IT folks rebuilt the user's profile, and that problem disappeared.
So, we may never know what was going on.
