Computer Problem

During Hurricane Gustov we had to leave home for a week. Before leaving home I turned off my Desktop. Upon our return, I turned on my computer and got a message---system memory low (windows never booted)---then it shut down.
I thought maybe the CMOS battery died so I went out and replaced it.
The computer came up again and windows loaded. It stayed on about 10 minutes and went out again. It will not load windows. the power comes on but I get nothing on the monitor-just a blank screen.

My computer is a Gateway 504GR
Intel Pentium 4 Processor 503
Processor Speed 3 GHZ 800 MHz FSB
1 mb L2 Cache
Intel 915G chip set

Any ideas?
Is it worth repairing?

Re: Computer Problem

Glad to hear you were ABLE to get home OK! Now, when you turn it on, do you get the usual beep and get to see the prompt for the key to get to BIOS? I don't remember if it's F12, F2 or DEL on a Gateway, it's been so long. I'm trying to see if we can get to the BIOS.

On the other hand, when you press the power button, if you get NOTHING, you could be faced with a blown power supply or worse yet, motherboard.

How much memory does this PC have installed? It could also be a failure of a memory stick (or the only stick, if there's just one installed). On a 3 year old computer, I wouldn't throw it in the trash quite yet. We need to dig just a bit more.

Re: Computer Problem

Thanks for the reply.

Here's where I am now.

I replaced the CMOS Battery and Cleaned the heck out of everthing I could get to without disconnecting anything.
The computer is back up and running, except for the internet.---Someone told me that moisture might have been the problem---
This computer was purchased 3/17/2005. It was under warranty up until March so I never removed the back as it was sealed, so it had it's share of dust.

What would be the next step to check out the system?
I have an internet question but I'll post it in the appropriate forum.

Re: Computer Problem

Try bypassing the router to see if you can connect to the internet. If you can, then your problem would be the router.

Re: Computer Problem

Just a wild thought but have you checked with your ISP to see if they are up and running OK after the storm?

As of now my computer is up and running.

I replaced the CMOS battery and Cleaned it.
My internet issue may have been the ISP in and out.
Thanks everyone

Re: Computer Problem

I appreciate that, we are very fortunate and will be ok.

Hurricane Ike hitting Galveston last night brought me a new problem:
We started yesterday getting power fluctuations(We are in the outer bands), lights dimming etc. I turned off my computer.
This morning --- The computer wouldn't BOOT on it's on.
I put my cd in and it booted up. (I am using it now to connect to Woody's)
What do I need to check out, to get it back where it will BOOT on it's on?

thanks-You folks are greatly appreciated

Re: Computer Problem

It seems to boot up normally with the CD?

Boot up and click, Start, type RUN, then SFC /SCANNOW , enter. Note the space between C /.
It should run to check for the proper system files and may ask for the CD location to retrieve any files.

Re: Computer Problem

I ran the scan.

It took about 20 minutes, and it did not give me any kind of report when it finished.

Should it have done something?
It didn't ask for the cd either.

I thought it strange that when I clicked START then RUN the command you gave me was already in the box, I did not have to type it.

Someone has been in the registry previously if it was already there.

Re: Computer Problem

Forgot to add....

The SFC does not give a report. If it finished the scan and did not request the CD that would indicate that your System Files are all OK.
