    using :-) gives a J

    Hi all

    appologies if this thread has been on before but one of my friends has recently installed Linux and since she has when sending an email to her BT Yahoo account and putting in :-) to give a smiley face it is displaying as the letter J on her system. Is this a Linux thing or something else.

    thanks

    Re: using :-) gives a J

    I've been using various Linux distributions for a number of years now, and can not think of this ever happening to me. To test it out, I sent an email from my gmail account to my Rogers Yahoo (it should be the same as BT Yahoo) account, and from Rogers to gmail.

    In both cases, I did not experience the letter J.

    What specific distribution is your friend using, what software is she using to send / receive the email? Who's sending the email to her BT Yahoo account?

    I don't think this is a Linux thing per se. I believe it's a font conversion issue and I tend to notice it with GMail in Firefox and with Apple's Mail software. Using GMail in IE, I don't think I've seen it. I suspect that something is converting the :-) to a Wingdings font and that is then being rendered differently in other programs.
