    Converting to XP (XP SP2)

I occasionally receive documents from others that have been saved in Word 7 (Vista?) and can't open or convert them. What to do?

    thanks.

I assume that you mean Word 2007. You can download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats. This will let you open Word 2007 documents, Excel 2007 workbooks and PowerPoint 2007 presentations.

I did the installation but when I go back to the document received with the docx extension, it still opens as garbage. Is there anything additional I have to do.

    Thanks

No, not as far as I know. When the converter has been installed your Word 2002 should recognize the docx extension when you double click the file in Windows Explorer. If you open the file from within Word, you should select "Word 2007 document (*.docx)" from the "Files of type" dropdown in the Open dialog.

Perhaps you need to look at the file type box when you try to open it and be sure that it does NOT say recover text from any file.

I think I figured it out. When I double-click on it as an attachment to an email, it doesn't work. If I save the file and then open it, it makes the conversion and opens fine. I'm not sure if it's supposed to do that, but as long as I know what works, I'm OK.

    Thanks again

It is advisable in general to save attachments before opening them - opening attachments directly from e-mail messages may leave unwanted copies behind.
