SP3 problem (Windows XP Media Edidion SP3)

About a week ago I clicked on the automatic update icon and it said that update to SP3 was available. I opened it and started the download, all went well for about 20 minutes
suddenly the download stopped, the blue progress bar was about 75% complete and under the bar it said "finishing install" . So I let it sit for about two hours and nothing
changed. I was unable to stop the download or close the window. I then restarted the computer. Since then, I am not able to connect to the Internet, alI I get is the "page cannot be displayed" screen. I know that it is not a modem or connection issue because I hooked up my sons computer to the port and it worked fine. I have Windows XP Media Edition and I HAD SP2 before all of this trouble began. I have a Compaq Presario. I called the local Best Buy Geek Squad and they said they might have to reload Windows (for $200.00) Before I do that, can I remove SP3 and reload SP2? I have a SP2 CD. Do you think that would help, or just make things worse. The system properties
screen shows that I do in fact have SP3 installed however I do not think I have ALL of it. I have tried a System Restore, but it said ünable to restore to an earlier date
Anyone have a suggestion? I have downloaded updates many times in the past with no problems, but I may never again ......Thank You

You should be able to go to Control Panel | Add/remove Programs and uninstall SP-3. Make sure that "show updates" at the top of Add/remove is checked.

If I uninstall SP-3 will I have to reinstall SP-2? The SP-2 CD that I have is for Windows Home Edition, I am running Media Edition, will that work ?

I suppose that if you uninstall SP3, you'll automatically revert to SP2.

The Sp-3 installer makes a backup of the files it is going to change. So, uninstalling SP-3 should automatically revert to the condition the PC was in immediately before the install started.

I'd recommend that you download Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers and use it to install SP-3. Don't be put off by the title. It is just the full version of SP-3. The Windows Update SP-3 installer does a pretty good job of determining what components to download but it is not perfect. I've found that using the full version of SP-3 will work when Windows Update fails. I'd also recomment that after download and BEFORE installation you burn the downloaded SP-3 file to a CD. That way you'll have it if you ever need to reinstall Windows from scratch.

    It worked! OUTSTANDING, I removed SP-3 and now all is well.Thank You all very much <img src=/S/cheers.gif border=0 alt=cheers width=30 height=16>
I think I will hold off for a while on re-loading SP-3, I do not think that I could stand the stress. Is there really any good reason to update now? I have been reading good and bad things about it
    Thank You,
    Gary

Re: SP3 problem (Windows XP Media Edidion SP3)

Windows XP SP3 is mainly a rollup of all updates that had been released after SP2 (in the summer of 2004), with one or two rather insignificant new features thrown in. So having SP3 is not really essential, its major benefit is that it ensures that you have ALL relevant post-SP2 updates applied in a consistent way.

Note: I have installed Windows XP SP3 on my home PC and on several PCs at work without any problem - the installation went smoothly and there were no problems afterwards.
