Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

    Hi all,

I was asked by my manager to install windows update server on our network at work. Can someone give me some advise or some info about the server and what would be the best way to install this server?

    Thanks,

Here is a general introduction: Build your own Windows Update server.

And you can find all Microsoft documentation here: Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) Home.

My advice would be to read everything available on the Microsoft website!

I found that there was a trade-off between usefulness and hassle, and (at the time) for our single server + 25 PCs, the hassle factor and resource requirements were too large, so I uninstalled it...

Re: Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

While there is some administrative effort involved I found that to be worth it compared to trying to ensure that everyone actually does install updates. I used a PC that was originally a desktop PC - a 2.8 Mhz P4 with 1 GB RAM. It works just fine for a relatively small number of PCs (15). Just make sure you've got enough disk space. More than 1GB RAM would be good too but it depends on the number of PCs you need to support. I found WSUS easy to install and administer. Just take some time to think about how to group your client PCs and what you want to do (if anything) about automatic approval of fixes. Make sure you install WSUS 3.0 SP-1. Last, as has been said, read everything you can from Microsoft.

Be careful of installing it on an existing machine.

It's probably worth saying that I installed (a previous version of) WSUS on our elderly and only server. which at the time had a mere 1 GB of memory and was rather short of disk space.

A larger and faster server would have probably shown no problems, but I don't have the time to revisit a reinstall of WSUS...

Re: Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

I have installed the server but it looks like that someone has tried to install the server on the same machine, and for some strange reason most of the steps in the installation guide were not shown on the screen while I was installing the WSUS server, can someone let me know how to access the WSUS local website, add computers and make sure whether the system was installed and functioning correctly as it should do

    Regards,

If you are installing WSUS 3.0 SP-1 it is not a local website anymore. It is an MMC snapin that you need to install on the client machine from which you will administer WSUS. I'm not sure if it gets installed automatically on the server or if you need to install it there.

Do you mean you still can't use the admin console or do you mean that you can't get clients to access your WSUS server?

Well, I can use the admin console but I cannot see any clients computers on the admin console. AS afr as I know you have to add the client computers on admin console e.g connect the client computers to the WSUS server.

    Thanks

That is correct. You need configure the clients to use the WSUS server via pushing a GP setting, or manually setting each client. See Step 5: Configure Automatic Updates & Determine a Method to Configure Clients for details.

Re: Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

On the clinet machien where it is says: "To point your client computer to your WSUS server In Group Policy Object Editor, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Update.
    2. In the details pane, double-click Specify intranet Microsoft update service location. (here I am typing in my srever name e.g. trp-svr4
    3. Click Enabled, and type the HTTP URL of the same WSUS server in the Set the intranet update service for detecting updates box and in the Set the intranet statistics server box. For example, type http://servername in both boxes, and then click OK.

But this thing is not working

    help please.

Both entries need to be "HTTP://servername".
