Re: Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

Did you configure Automatic Updates as per:

    To configure Automatic Updates
In Group Policy Object Editor, expand Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Update.

In the details pane, double-click Configure Automatic Updates.

Click Enabled, and then click one of the following options:

Notify for download and notify for install: This option notifies a logged-on administrative user before the download and before the installation of the updates.

Auto download and notify for install: This option automatically begins downloading updates and then notifies a logged-on administrative user before installing the updates.

Auto download and schedule the install: If Automatic Updates is configured to perform a scheduled installation, you must also set the day and time for the recurring scheduled installation.

Allow local admin to choose setting: With this option, local administrators are allowed to use Automatic Updates in Control Panel to select a configuration option of their choice. For example, they can choose their own scheduled installation time. Local administrators are not allowed to disable Automatic Updates.

    Click OK.

Joe I have done exactly what you said but I still cannot see any added computers on WSUS admin console?

Remember that the WSUS client starts psuedo randomly sometime in the next 24 hours. You can get it to run earlier by running "wuauclt.exe /detectnow". Even that is not always immediate.

Re: Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

    Hello again,

Checked the WSUS server but no computers were added. I still do not understand why the server address should be http://servername,
do I have to enable somehow the http: for it to work. do I need to configure the IIS in anyway?

Re: Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

You need http because the update client uses the same mechanism as when you connnect to Windows Update. Have you checked to make sure all the required services are running on the client PCs? Did you also enable Automatic Updates in the group policy? See Microsoft Windows Server Update Services Tools and Utilities for some software that may help.

Re: Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

Your client software can not find the WSUS server. Double check the server name. Could be a firewall setting on the client or server. Can you ping the server from a client?

In the Console, you can right click on any update in the "Updates" section and select "Status Report" or right click on any PC in the "Computers" section and select "Status Report".

Re: Installing Windows Update Server (windows server 2003 RC2)

Guys I managed to solve the problem by changing the port number from 8530 to port 80. One more thing, for some reason the client machines do not get the prompt to install updates etc. see the computers on the attached image, what does: installed/not applicable percentage mean, many computers are stuck at 99% .

    Cheers

I'd suggest that you start reading the material at Windows Server Update Services (WSUS) Home. There is very detailed information about WSUS there including Terminology for Update Status.
