    Trojan horse

Yesterday I was surfing and suddenly I get these goofy warnings that I need to download malware software. These looked suspicious - purported to be from Microsoft, but having weird addresses in browser bar - I also had task bar warnings popping up. I immediately stopped everything and started a series of scans as well as running a complete search of the box for the malware objects the warnings were touting.

I run ZoneAlarm, AVG, Spyware Doctor, and Spyware Blaster (I had a major virus problem a couple of years ago).

The interesting part of this exercise was that each of these four products found parts of the infection and isolated or removed it. I specifically ran all four and got four unique sets of quarantined or deleted objects. None of these objects contained the info the warnings touted.

I have wondered about the necessity of running all four of these packages, but after yesterday - I am glad I had all four.

Glad you were able to get rid of the infection. You're right, it's still a good idea to use multiple anti-malware programs - none of them seem to catch ALL nasties, but a suitable combination will.

It is not surprising that you did not find the "infections" described in the bogus alerts. The bogus alerts are not customized to your PC but are merely advertising. It would be quite a coincidence if they were accurate!

Are you certain that these "parts of the infection" were even related to what you suspected was an attack or a Trojan trying to get out ?? As Jefferson pointed out, these sorts of things are almost always generic scare tactics of advertisers and not actually viruses that have infected your PC.

I am pretty sure they were all connected - my anti-virus / spyware runs between 1 and 4 each am and the day before there were no indications of any problems

That would be a pretty fair indication. Had you downloaded anything or received any stange emails or attachments in that 24 hour period ?? It shouldn't have mattered though, as you seem to be well protected.

Might I ask if you recall the site you were on when the incident occured ??

No - I don't recall what it was - I was googling something and went through several unfamiliar sites earlier in the morning
