Hosting Question

I'm looking for another Lounger or passerby who has any web hosting done by HostOnce.com.

They have been my web host for several years and quite frankly, if it weren't for the initial pricing arrangement, I would find someplace else to host my domain. ( AlHoffman.Org ) When I first started with them, I had a $5.95 per month "deal" that included unlimited storage and bandwidth. When they started imposing limits, their notice to me was that as long as I stayed, my terms would not change. So, I've hung in there because my site is only a hobby site anyway.

But they are getting to be more trouble than it's worth and they're just about impossible to contact. My domain has been inaccessible for about a week, either by FTP or email or HTTP. I am able to get to their home page and the support page where I have an open support "ticket" but have had no contact from them as to what's going on. I've written two followup messages without response.

My reason for this post is to find someone else who has a domain hosted by this company to see if it's ONLY my domain that down or are their servers completely "off the air?" Googling doesn't look too good for my "cause" for there are lots of hits from people having trouble with this host. They may be gone...gone...

While I'm waiting...

It doesn't look good! This hit is just one of many, very recent: Do Not Use HostOnce for Web Hosting. (See all the comments down below on that page.)

This afternoon I will be starting a contact with 1and1.Com to see if they will transfer the DNS for me (Network Solutions was my registrar). Luckily I "own" the domain name and have a "pretty recent" backup, just in case HostOnce doesn't come back up.

Risky business, this web hosting, huh?

That was amazingly quick work, Al. I just clicked on your site and it popped right up. Have you transferred to 1and1.com already, or has HostOnce returned from the dead?

Cheers,
Regards,
PaulB

Re: Hosting Question

Wow, my negative mental telepathy may be having an impact on them! Before I left for work this morning, my domain email came back to life after a week of absence and now the web page, as you noticed, is back among the living. The FTP access as I write is still not functioning. I am able to get to my control panel and check the FTP name and password, but I can't access it. Whenever I can do so, I'm gonna pull a backup copy down to my hard drive.

No, I just came home and haven't contacted 1and1 yet, but I'll be doing that shortly. I can't take any more of this with HostOnce. It's too frequent and too long per episode for my liking. I know we have a Lounger or two who have been satisfied with 1and1 so I'm gonna go with them and make the transfer.

Hi Al, I'm a novice as far as web hosting is concerned so here goes:
What's FTP access? You pull a backup copy of what down to your hard drive?

Re: Hosting Question

If you're unfamiliar with the FTP process, here's a tutorial on what it's used for. FTP Tutorial - How to access web files via FTP?

Basically, it's the internet protocol for sending and receiving files directly to a web location. All the files (and directories) on my web domain have been placed there by ME using an FTP program to upload them to the web host. I'm a little behind in my exact duplicates of what's on my web domain, so I'm waiting to again gain FTP access to my own domain so I can reverse the process and DOWNLOAD a copy of what's already there to make it easier for me to establish a new web host. Whew! Confusing? It ain't so bad once you get the hang of it...

Re: Hosting Question

Thanks! From the FTP Tutorial you posted the link to:
"To use an FTP client you need to have an FTP account to the web account where you plan to upload your files. In case this is your hosting account, the main account for using FTP is your control panel account. You can also create additional FTP accounts for other users."
What about the files we users upload to the Lounge threads, are they uploaded through an FTP client?

Re: Hosting Question

No, the Lounge uses HTTP. But when we moved to a new server at the end of June, Mike Wolfman used FTP to transfer the files that make up the Lounge.

Thank you Hans, so what would other users use additional FTP accounts for?

Re: Hosting Question

I gave you one example - transferring files directly to or from a specific web address.

Re: Hosting Question

If you manage a large website, you may want to spread the load and appoint several people who can upload content to the website. One option would be to give all of them the name and password for a single FTP account, but it might be more convenient to give them individual accounts.

Re: Hosting Question

I can't believe that one or more Loungers who have touted 1and1.Com in the past haven't chimed in with an "attaboy" for them. Well, I made the purchase yesterday and the DNS change today, so now I wait, prior to re-uploading all the files to my web domain. Fortunately, I have a local copy of everything, so HostOnce is history from my standpoint.

Now, I just have to get used to the new user "control panel" at 1and1...

Re: Hosting Question

Thank you Hans, I need a clarification here...I've seen legal transcription websites where clients are required to provide FTP LoginID and password to upload sound files to be transcribed; do any of those clients require a separate FTP account to do that or is it a different matter?

Re: Hosting Question

It's a matter of how it has been set up. A single FTP account to be used by everyone who is authorized has the advantage of simplicity, but you'd have to change the password and distribute it if you want to exclude someone. Separate accounts take more time to set up, but if you want to exclude someone, you simply disable his/her account.

Re: Hosting Question

I'll keep answering myself because the subject of the thread might cause someone to want to know. I know that "first impressions" can be good and bad, but my first encounters with 1and1 have been excellent. My account with them was setup quickly with an instruction email following. I've been in email contact with support twice with almost immediate responses both times. My emails were simple, new customer things, making sure I had correctly done the DNS changing. In the second email, this morning, the support guy even mentioned their 24/7 telephone support and encouraged me to call if needed. That's nice. Much, much better than what I've put up with for the past nine years or so! (HostOnce STILL has not contacted me about the outage on my domain and it has been 8-10 days now.)

Now I just wait for the DNS to make its way around the web so I can see my domain again. I've already got my email and FTP up and running as of this morning, so my Lounge email works ( ) and I've already uploaded the first bunch of files by FTP. Thanks to DaveA and other Loungers who have mentioned 1and1 in the past...
