Free Antivirus for Windows 98 SE

I just tried to install AVG 8 on a system with Windows 98 SE and learned that AVG 8 is not compatible with WIN 98. Is there any free antivirus that is compatible with WIN 98. This is a system for a local non-profit organization. Thanks for any leads.

Avast! is free, and it runs on Windows 98. System requirements: 486 Processor, 32MB RAM and 100MB of free hard disk space.

You should take a look at this page for some security info re 98. It says AVG v5 works with Win 98.

It's not clear, if you follow the links there, that AVG still offer a download of version 5, and if you could get hold of it, could you install updated virus definitions?

Edited to add: the link to http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 on the page you suggested gets redirected on the AVG website to http://free.avg.com/ww.download-avg-...s-free-edition where they only seem to offer version 8.

No, it's not very clear at all. I did a little checking and as far as I can determine nothing before version 7 is available anywhere. Your point about updating the definition is probably the most sound reason for not using AVG in this instance. And as Hans pointed out, Avast! is compatable with Windows 98 and IMHO the better product.
