FP won't show database results! (XP and/or 2000)

I need a small favor from someone here who has a few moments.

I have a website that I would like to show current prices for computer parts. The problem is that the prices are stored on a .xls file. That .xls is then linked via "insert databse results" to the .asp page. All fine and dandy so far. The problem is that when I publish the page, all I get is the column headings. I get no results. The .xls file is set up properly with named fields, and is located in the same directory as the rest of the site.

My ISP swears that it is FP's fault. I asked if they have FPSE installed, and they tell me that they do.

So, if someone could be kind enough to create a page that gets results from an .xls file, I could then publish it to my site, and see if it works. Please verify that the page works on your site before posting it here.

I'd really like to nail this down. It's been bugging me since FP2000.

    Thanks.

I'm wondering if it is a permissions issue. Where the anon web access doesnt have the "rights" to update the db. Have you discussed this with your ISP?

Re: FP won't show database results! (XP and/or 2000)

Well, I just called my ISP, and now they tell me: "We don't support active server pages." <img src=/S/aflame.gif border=0 alt=aflame width=15 height=15>

Is there any other way to get this to work?

I have an .xls file that contains product descriptions and pricing. I want the webpage(s) to update from that .xls file.

    Any suggestions would be welcome.

    Thanks!

    Hi
Attack it by the 'crude but obvious method' I don't know how frequently you envisage updating the parts-list, but do it by hand then upload the new spreadsheet every (two?) days.
Either that or, since you've an ISP that has server-side FP extensions, you're probably paying for the privilege, vote with your feet and find one that also supports ASPs.

    Not much help, I'm afraid.

You may find that the Developer Option (?) is required in addition the having FPSE on your web server. I think this is usually an 'additional cost option', and I'm surprised they don't offer it at all.

You may be well advised to change ISP.

Otherwise, do a manual update as MerC suggests. You could semi-automate the process with FTP software that will do scheduled updates.

Re: FP won't show database results! (XP and/or 2000)

Hmmm. Scheduled updates you say? That could be an option.

I'd NEVER EVER switch IPSs because its a cable connection. Go back to 56K? No way! Hey, that sounds like a good advertisement for them. Go back to 56K? No way! Ha ha ha ha.

Anyways, I think I might have a line on some unlimted free space that does offer .asp support.

Thanks to everyone that helped (or tried to help). <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

Does it have to be ASP? Perhaps your ISP offers other database support, such as ColdFusion or PHP.

I had the same problem on one server that couldn't handle ASP (for a variety of reasons) but could handle CF quite nicely. Took a few days to learn the rudiments, using the free ColdFusion Express server, but my db on that server is jogging along merrily.

Re: FP won't show database results! (XP and/or 2000)

Could I ask who/what/where the 'unlimited free space' you mentioned is? Only I have recently got a cable modem, only to discover that my free ISP (for my websites) insists that you have to use their own phone number to dial in for FTP, so I have to drop out and use dial-up whenever I want to upload! I can't use my cable people for webspace because the websites are not mine personally, but belong to organisations, so if/when I ever get fed up and pass them on I don't want them to be tied to me.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

Re: FP won't show database results! (XP and/or 2000)

    Hi Beryl
Not many free iSPs offer unlimited web-space. I believe Madasafish is one, but you have to use their phone.
These 3 can be accessed from your own ISP :
Freeserve (15Mb space) Accessibilty here might just be because I'm on Freeserve Anytime.
    GreatXscape (12Mb)
British Library (2Mb upgradeable to 20Mb if you can convince them you need it)
If anyone knows of an ISP that satisfies all 3 criteria:

    <UL><LI>free
<LI>unlimited (or at least generous) free web space
<LI>accessible from any DUC[/list]I'd be happy to hear of it . (I know, wouldn't we all...)

If it's free On Line Storage space you're after (like the now commercial X-Drive, My Space and the like) try <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.myvisto.com/>here</A>

    Cheers

Re: FP won't show database results! (XP and/or 2000)

Thanks, Merc - yes, I know about the online storage space providers - I even used them for a while when it was essential I could transfer files from home to work and back again when they were too big for floppies, but they started charging/reducing the space they allowed, and the necessity went away for me (new job!) so I gave them up. <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

I have also tried Freeserve, but their technical support is horrendous (or sometimes non-existent!); I can't imagine being able to convince the British Library that my little sites warrant their attention and I just went to GreatXscape and their sign-on page is suspended! <img src=/S/bummer.gif border=0 alt=bummer width=15 height=15>

So, like you, I'd love to hear from anyone who knows of any others ...!

As a matter of interest, I just checked Freeserve and you're right - FreeservePlus is a different matter, without it you do have to use their dialup number to access them. <img src=/S/sigh.gif border=0 alt=sigh width=15 height=15>

Beryl, My web site <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.royalporthcawl.com>http://www.royalporthcawl.com</A> is now with a company called PCS in Cardiff at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.pingu.co.uk>http://www.pingu.co.uk</A>. In two weeks they are going live with ASP capable servers and they only cost

Re: FP won't show database results! (XP and/or 2000)

Thanks, Doug, I just checked their site - they certainly look interesting and as you say, a tenner shouldn't break the bank. Can I just check, though, you don't mention (and I can't find any obvious mention on the site, either) whether you have to use their dialup number to FTP to the site - or is this something to do with the ASP capable servers you mention? I'm not up on them, I'm afraid.

    Your help is much appreciated.

I use Bt Surf Together, Home Highway and Freeserve to access the internet. ISP and Web Host don't have to be the same!!
