    AutoSum? (Excel 2007)

I am not understanding AutoSum at all.

Why wouldn't/couldn't I just use SUM? I can't seem to find in the help why or why not.

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Re: AutoSum? (Excel 2007)

You don't have to use AutoSum, but it's a handy way to create formulas without actually typing them yourself. Take the example in the screenshot below.
The top picture shows some data in tabular form. I have selected the numeric data plus a column to the right and a row below.
The bottom picture shows the result of clicking AutoSum. Excel has entered SUM formulas in the empty cells, creating row totals, column totals and the grand total in one fell swoop.
Of course, I could have entered the SUM formulas myself, but this is much faster.
And by clicking the little dropdown arrow on the right of the AutoSum button, I can apply other functions than SUM as well, such as COUNT, MAX etc.

    Hi Chuck

AutoSum is really just a "shortcut" to write the =Sum([range]) for you.

There is a small amount of intelligence behind AutoSum as it will decide if the range to be calculated it. It will look for a series of numbers directly to its left or directly above. What are you finding confusing when you are working on your sheets?
