    Copying a range freezes computer (2000 / SR-1 and SR-2)

    Hey guys....

I've got a problem that has just baffled my user, myself, and my boss.

Excel 2000, SR-1 installed locally on a Windows 2000 PC. When a range is high-lighted, and the copy command is invoked, the computer freezes. The only way to recover from this problem is to power down the computer, and start over.

This problem happens in numerous spreadsheets, every time the file is opened and the copy command is used.

This is the only Windows 2000 computer in the company. We've been able to do this process on Windows 98 computers, running the same software, without any problems.

We've upgraded to SR-2, and the same thing occurs.

    Any ideas?

    Chris,

One avenue you might explore would be the graphics card and driver, and maybe an updated driver might help.

Can you invoke the task manager whilst the PC is in that state and get any clues at all ?

    Hi Andrew....

Thanks for the suggestion on the graphics card and driver. We'll give that a shot...

As for task manager, that's a no go. The only thing that can be done is to power off the machine.

We performed a 'scandisk' and a defrag. Removed all temporary files, removed the anti-virus software.... even booted to VGA mode... still happens.

Have you checked the contents of the XLSTART directory to ensure no files are in there that could be causing this?

Have you renamed the Excel registry folder? Rename hkey_current_usersoftwaremicrosoftofficeexcel to OldExcel and relaunch Excel. This resets everything to the defaults.

Does it freeze after clicking on the Edit button? or the Ctrl-C? Can you enter another value in the cell?
We had something here which crashed when copying, like you describe, but actually was whenever the cell was accessed. We could navigate around the worksheet, but couldn't edit a cell or delete or anything. I'm trying to find what our solution was, but I remember it was something simple.

I hate to ask something that might seem obvious, but have you cleaned up the hard drive on this thing?
