    url icons on desktop

Just a small niggle, really. I use Opera as my default browser, and it is definitely set as such - that's what opens if I click a link in an email, or type a URL in the Run box, and so on. But if I create a shortcut to a website on my desktop, for instance by dragging from the address bar, it gets a Firefox icon, as shown below. Why? Is there any way to change that?

(I'm using Windows XP Home with SP3.)

    Activate Windows Explorer.
    Select Tools | Folder Options...
    Activate the File Types tab.
Select Internet Shortcut in the list.
    Click Advanced.
    Click Change Icon...
    Click Browse...
Navigate to the folder where Opera is installed and select the Opera executable (probably Opera.exe).
See if there is an appropriate icon.

    Re: url icons on desktop

I did that. When I got to the File Types tab, the little icon against it in the list was an IE one, as shown below. <img src=/S/confused.gif border=0 alt=confused width=15 height=20>

I changed it as you suggested, and now in the list it shows an Opera icon against Internet Shortcut, but still when I drag from the address bar to the desktop, I get a FF icon!

Have you set Opera to disguise itself as Firefox, by any chance?

    Re: url icons on desktop

What happens if you create such a shortcut in any other folder (than the Desktop) and then if you change (temporarily) the view in that folder from perhaps Icon to Detail to Tiles etc? Does it change?

The size of the icons on the Desktop is same as in Icon view, and I have seen the odd case were icons for the same file type were different depending on type of icon (size).

Probably not answering your question directly, but anything in <post:=669,023>post 669,023</post:> and replies that might help you customise the icon?

    Re: url icons on desktop

I have set Opera to identify as Firefox on a few sites (the Lounge included, or I couldn't make attachments to posts) but I still get the same behaviour if I drag from the address bar on a site where it is definitely set to identify as Opera.

    Re: url icons on desktop

It doesn't let me just drag from the address bar into another folder to create a link to a URL. But I tried creating a new shortcut in another folder and typing in the URL http://news.bbc.co.uk as the target. The result was as you predicted - in Thumbnail and Tile views, I get an IE icon. But in Icons, List and Details views, I get a FF icon. (And Opera is still set as my default browser.)

Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't think it helps.

I don't know if it will work, but you might try repairing the icon cache. You can use TweakUI XP for this (free download from Microsoft PowerToys for Windows XP) - see screenshot.

    Re: url icons on desktop

    OK. I'll try that.

I've discovered another strange thing. If I drag from the address bar in IE, then what I get on the desktop is the favicon of the site concerned, as shown below, which seems to be much better. (Not a sufficient reason to go back to IE, though.)

    Hans

I see on the MS PowerToys page that it says "PowerToys only work with U.S. English regional settings." Should I worry? I use UK English settings.

    Re: url icons on desktop

It's a general disclaimer - the 'softies who develop PowerToys only test them on a US English system, so they can't guarantee that they work correctly on other regional settings. However, I have the Dutch language version of Windows XP and I've been using TweakUI XP and several other PowerToys without problems. So you should be able to use TweakUI XP too.

    Re: url icons on desktop

    Hi,
OK. First the creation thing: that's odd? If I create an URL I usually only drags to the Desktop (but maybe later cut/paste to elsewhere), but just tested and it works with a test folder. Maybe that's due to something else, Opera? I'll leave that for the moment, since it works (as a test) to create a shortcut as you did.

If you right click the file (URL) what icon do you see in the properties (given that it shows IE or Fx depending on view), Opera?

I had a similar problem last year, but for HTM/HTML files, see <!post=this thread,654793>this thread<!/post> if you like (and depending on how I define "problem" <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> I still have, but if you can't solve something you can the change definition of "problem"). Yours can be something slightly different (one more browser and URLs), but let me explain my experience.

Acctually, I solved it once in that thread ( <img src=/S/whisper.gif border=0 alt=whisper width=29 height=17> reinstall Fx, in my case, and some cleaning), but I have found it to be a bit volatile. It comes and goes; when I posted my reply to you I did a quick check of the "current status" - for me it's HTML files so a folder such as Fx's "bookmarkbackups" is good to check, few files, as standard sorted in Tiles. At post time they showed the correct icon, in my case Fx. But now, as I post this, they have changed to IE. <img src=/S/nuts.gif border=0 alt=nuts width=15 height=15>

And I agree with Hans; I've been using Tweak UI on Swedish systems, works OK. Though I'm not sure if it's going to help in this case.

If come up with something more substantial, I will come back.

    Re: url icons on desktop

OK - I tried the rebuild icons facility in TweakUI, then dragged from my Opera address bar. And what did I get? See below.

    Thanks for your help.
