    Table of Contents renumbering (2003)

    Strange thing.
I created a document with all new styles, TOC based on those styles, very lovely. However, when I sent it via Outlook to another person, the TOC page numbers all went to "3". When she printed it out it was fine and when she returned to her computer, the numbers had reset themselves correctly. Also, on one pass, changes were still tracking on another person's computer, although I had no comments or changes tracked. Is it possible for this problem to be picking up the attributes of a previous version? She wasn't getting that merge message upon opening, but everytime it opens it's in reading layout.

    Anyone know of a glitch?

    thanks!

If someone opens a Word document directly from an e-mail message, it is opened in reading layout by default, I think, unless that user has disabled that option in Tools | Options...

Not really - numbering in Word acts weirdly from time to time. Printing or print previewing often corrects it.

    Hans,
I just got "word" (tee-hee) from another forum that the reading layout will produce the wrong numbering in the TOC if the document is opened directly up from mail. Maybe that's what you were hinting at in your first answer.

One should *never* open an attachment directly from an e-mail. Always save the attachment to disk first, and open the saved version. Opening attachments can lead to all kinds of problems.
