Add menu item for total duration of music folder (XP Pro SP3)

As a follow-up to an older (but recently revived) thread, and in case anyone's interested, attached are instructions for adding an Explorer right-click menu item to display the total duration of the audio files in a folder. (H/T to Chris Greaves for much of the code.)

Note that this works for mp3 files but doesn't work for .wav files. I haven't tested any other formats, but the general rule would seem to be that it will work for any format for which Windows stores the duration as part of the file's Properties.

As further noted in the attachment, I don't know whether these instructions are appropriate for any Windows version other than XP, and they include Registry edits.

    ----------------

I posted a question in the aforementioned thread that didn't attract a solution, but it was 7 posts (not to mention 3 years) from the top of the thread, so I'll re-ask it here in case the answerperson missed it ...

Does anyone know if there's a way to directly call a VBScript from Explorer's right-click menu? Whenever I try (including with a one-line script that just displays a MsgBox), I get an error dialog that displays the name of the folder I've right-clicked and tells me "Access is denied."

There's a clunky workaround -- having the menu call a batch file that, in turn, runs the VBScript -- but I'd prefer to have the menu run the script directly.

The attached instructions use this workaround, but I'll re-post a more streamlined version if anybody knows how to call the script directly.

Sorry I can't help with your questions, however I am somewhat interested in yours and Chris' tutorial on the right-click thing. So, I'm in the process of studying your writing to see if I should try it out. Meanwhile I'm also attaching an .RTF version of your work to eliminate (I hope) the very long lines at the beginning and end of the file. I hope someone will let me know if I didn't do it correctly as I only "discovered" using an .RTF here in The Lounge recently. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>
