hyperlinks to other files (Word 2003 SP3)

I am just learning how to use hyperlinks in a Word document to jump to other files.

My first attempt worked, except it opened the other file (a PDF) in a browser window instead of Acrobat Reader.

1ST QUESTION: Is there a way to make it open the PDF in Acrobat reader instead of the browser?

2ND QUESTION: What is the purpose of the Target Frame option & how might it be of use to me?

3RD QUESTION: I think that I am using a relative hyperlink. My intention is to use a relative hyperlink on the assumption that that the end user will have my main document plus the linked documents together in the same folder. Yet when I hover over the link, the "tool tip" that pops open refers to the "file:///C:targetfile.pdf" (where my linked file is named targetfile.pdf). Does this suggest that my reference is not relative?

    1. You can specify how a file type such as .pdf is opened in the File Types tab of the Tools | Folder Options... dialog in Windows Explorer.

    2. The Target Frame option is (as far as I know) intended for hyperlinks to web pages - you can decide whether the hyperlink opens in the current browser window or in a new window.

    3. See macropod's Star Post <!post=Relative Paths in Word Fields (All),670027>Relative Paths in Word Fields (All)<!/post> for a way to make hyperlinks to files use a relative path.

    Hans,

Thanks for the speedy reply. I will see macropods post.

Regarding Q1, when I to to the tools, folder options in explorer, it tells me that PDF files are associated with Adobe 7.0, yet the link opens on my browser PDF reader. Might this be because it sees it as a URL ?

I don't know - a hyperlink to a PDF file opens the file in Adobe Reader for me. Hopefully someone else will have a suggestion.

That's why I'm wondering if it is seeing a longer pathname as an URL and going to the browser (?)

I want it to default to assuming that the linked files are in the same folder as the referring Word document regardless of the pathname in front of the filename.

That's the way that I think it would be most useful for potential users who may access it on a "D" drive or on a "T" drive, or whatever...

You can use macropod's field codes to make the hyperlink look in the same folder as the document.

This assumes that you can double click a PDF in Windows Explorer and open it with Acrobat directly.

Does this link give you a clue to opening a PDF outside of a browser? Although the instructions are discussing Office files, the same principle should apply to PDFs. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=162059

There is an option in Acrobat to open links in your browser window. Open Acrobat and look through the settings to find and clear this.
