Disappearing email (Outlook 2003)

My father-in-law called and has outlook. I am trying to help him but I do not use Outlook, so it's hard to follow along.

When he closes an email it disppears from his inbox. Also, he cannot see previously read emails in his inbox. It says something about "filter applied". Question - How does he take off the filter? Again, I don't use Outlook or I could probably figure it out myself.

Let him do the following in Outlook:
- Select View | Arrange By | Current View | Customize Current View...
- Click Filter.
- Click Clear All.
- Click OK (twice).
