XP Unlimited machine won't boot (XP SP 2)

I noticed that my XP Unlimited machine had crashed and so I rebooted it. The machine started to boot and got about halfway through loading XP Unlimited and then it hung for 10 minutes. I've since done this several times now and the same thing happens every time. I even tried rebooting it in safe mode, but no luck.

The machine it's on is relatively new (Dell Dimension 9150) and I installed XP Unlimited on it less than a year ago.

    Any suggestions?

To quote the vendors website "XP Unlimited turns your Windows System into a full blown Terminal Server, without any limit. XP Unlimited gives you eXtra Productivity when using Microsoft Windows."
It's cheap (once license per XP Unlimited machine) and you can turn a plain old Dell Dimension into a terminal server. Occasionally it's a bit slow or I get a blue screen of death, but other than that I''ve been happily using it for the past couple of years until about an hour ago when it suddenly failed to boot.

A bit more information about what you were doing when it crashed. Also what AV, malware, firewall, etc programs are installed and what happens when you try to boot into safe mode.

Have you contacted XP Unlimited or the company that sold you the software for support ??

Re: XP Unlimited machine won't boot (XP SP 2)

The machine uses AVG for virus protection and hosts a calendar for a conference room. The machine wasn't doing anything when it crashed (as far as I can tell no one had used it for a couple of days.) I did indeed contact the vendor and their conclusion was that since the machine wouldn't boot in safe mode that the problem was not related to XP Unlimited. They suggested a driver problem or failing hardware. I've decided to junk the machine since I can't run a virus scan or update drivers if it won't even boot.

If you are intent on "junking" the machine then I'll go no further.

If you are interesting in salvaging your investment, post back and we will try to assist you in resurecting the system.

You think it can be saved? I'd *love* to be able to get it back up and running. As I've said it's a relatively new machine.

Saved is a relative term when it comes to computers, but, yes I suspect that this machine can be brought back to a functional state unless there has been a major hardware failure like the hard drive or motherboard.

From what you have said so far, it seems that the machine was running, but idle or not doing any work when it crashed and when you attempted to reboot, it hung repeatedly and will not start in Safe Mode. What have you done to try and get it to boot into Safe Mode ?? What key are you tapping at bootup ??

If you are not continuously tapping the F8 key from the moment the system starts its boot process (immediately after you press the power button until it boots to the Windows Advanced Options menu) then take a look at this information but don't do anything until you post back and let us know if you were able to get to the Advanced Options menu.

Yes I was able to get to the advanced options menu listed in the page to which you linked.

Re: XP Unlimited machine won't boot (XP SP 2)

My first suggestion would be to boot to the advanced options menu and then, using the arrow key, scroll down to Last Known Good Configuration and then hit Enter.

If the machine still refuses to boot then go back to the advanced options menu and boot into Safe Mode and then do a System Restore to a time before you know the machine had crashed. I'd suggest that you restore back to a date when there was activity on the computer to be certain it was working.

Please post back and let us know if either of these steps worked.

Re: XP Unlimited machine won't boot (XP SP 2)

    Doc Watson,

I've tried booting in safe mode and I've tried the last known good configuration option. Neither worked. Windows XP starts loading and the machine hangs after XP Unlimited starts loading. (This is why I thought it was an XP Unlimited problem--the trouble doesn't start until Windows hands control over to XP Unlimited.)

Re: XP Unlimited machine won't boot (XP SP 2)

Did you do a System Restore in Safe Mode ?? If so and things are no better than before then we have eliminated a hardware problem simply because it will boot to Safe Mode, and it would seem that it is not an XP problem if the machine doesn't hang until XP Unlimited starts to load.

My feeling is that this is an issue with XP Unlimited (regardless of what their support people say) and the solution would seem to be to uninstall XP Unlimited to get back control of your computer. If you concure with my thoughts, you can do this from Safe Mode. Boot the system into Safe Mode and then go to Start>Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs and remove XP Unlimited and reboot. At this point your system should boot to XP without hanging. You will then have to decide if you want to install XP Unlimited again or not.

Please let us know how you make out.

Re: XP Unlimited machine won't boot (XP SP 2)

Hmmm, I don't seem to be doing a good job of explaining what's going on (for which I apologize.) As the machine is booting it shows the windows logo, then before the machine is done booting, before you can log on to do anything, (like uninstalling XP Unlimited or running a virus scan or doing a system restore) control passes over to XP Unlimited. Only once XP Unlimited is loaded can you log into the machine and attempt to do anything. I am also beginning to think the problem is with XP Unlimited as its while that program is loading that the system hangs.

No, I understood what you were saying. I'm not sure you are "getting" what I'm asking you to do.

When you start the machine are you going right to the keyboard and tapping on the F8 key until you get the Advanced Options menu ?? Are you then selecting Safe Mode from the menu and hitting Enter ?? If you are (as you said you were in an earlier post), then Windows should be starting in Safe Mode. Once in Safe Mode, you can then uninstall programs and do several other basic functions to get things straightened out on your system while many of the advanced processes of the OS and other programs are not running.
