    Pop-ups

Despite having various security progs running like Spybot, Zone Alarm, AVG, Adaware 2007 I occasionally get messages popping up from the sys tray (see attachment) what more can I do to stop these annoying intrusions please?

    Re: Pop-ups

This is a message from the RealPlayer Message Center (as you can see from the icon in the upper left corner).
    To get rid of it:
    - Start RealPlayer.
    - Select Tools | Preferences...
    - Click 'Message Center' under 'Automatic Services'.
    - Click 'Configure Message Center'.
    - Clear the check box 'Check for new messages'.
    - Click OK to close the 'Message Center' dialog.
    - Click OK to close the Preferences dialog.
    - Quit RealPlayer.

Real Player's annoying habit of doing things like this are a good reason for using Real alternative instead. (You need something as an alternative, since many sites provide content that uses that format.)

The only thing is, earlier this year Joe Perez mentioned having some trouble with Real Alternative in <post:=698,520>post 698,520</post:> and that wasn't the first time I'd heard of something "negative" about it. As Joe said, it may have come a long way and I don't know because I've managed to get by on WMP for the past couple of years and don't have any "Real" product installed any more.

    Re: Pop-ups

I hardly encounter websites that need RealPlayer or one of its alternatives any more, but I have some downloaded .ram music files that I like to play from time to time.
I agree that the default settings of RealPlayer are fairly irritating, but that's true of much software. But you can turn the irritating ones off in the Preferences dialog, and RealPlayer doesn't try to turn them on again behind your back, like some other software, so I've kept it around.

    Re: Pop-ups

I think my prejudice against Real Player stems from some of the gripes described for example in the Criticism heading in the Wikipedia article - though Googling about gripes with it suggests that it may have improved since last time I used it. I certainly used to find that my firewall revealed that Real Player was accessing the internet a lot as mentioned in another article here . If it really has improved I'm glad to hear it, though by then they had lost me as a user.

At one time I had to have Real Player, or the alternative, to be able to access content at for example BBC websites, though now you mention it they seem to give a choice now between it and WMP.

    Re: Pop-ups

I'm not a fan of RealPlayer, but recent versions behave much better than older ones. If you keep the Message Center turned off, there's no resident process that keeps running even if RealPlayer isn't active, and you can tell RealPlayer not to "phone home".

But for most users, there's no RealNeed™ for RealPlayer: there aren't many websites any more that offer content exclusively in RealPlayer format.

    Re: Pop-ups

Thanks everyone for your comments..... I too tried Real Alternative some months ago & it messed my computer up Real Bad so deleted it and re-installed Real Player as one particular site I visit still has many archived video interviews that are unfortunately, only in that format - though thankfully- their most recent ones are predominently in WMP. Thanks again .....
