The name for my dvd burner currently is CD Drive (E and it was DVD Drive (E in my computer. how do i change this? I have been looking for a solution to this for weeks. 2nd question is not related but when I double click on my main harddrive (C I open my ACDSee program for my pictures. Welcome to the Lounge, John.

Have you tried reinstalling, or updating the driver for the DVD drive?

I'm not sure what to suggest about the other issue, but I expect someone else will come along with an idea soon.

    > when I double click on my main harddrive (C I open my ACDSee program for my pictures.

    Try this:
    - Select Start | Run...
    - Type regedit and press Enter or click OK.
    - This will start the Registry Editor.
    - Navigate to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTDriveShell on the left hand side.
    - When you click on the shell key, you'll see an entry named (Default).
    - The data for this entry should be the word none.
    - If it's something else (in particular, something related to ACDSee), double click the name (Default) and change the value to the word none, then click OK.

Since i installed Nero 8 my Start Menu has not been the same. In Start i am missing my printers & scanners shortcut, my microsoft help and support shortcut, and the Run shortcut. Could you please tell me what & where i need to do to restore Run and the other shortcuts-icons?

I'd get rid of Nero, but that's up to you to decide.
Right-click the Start button and select Properties from the popup menu.
Click Customize..., then activate the Advanced tab to restore options to the Start menu.

attached is a picture of my start menu. in the start customize advanced window i had already checked all the files i wanted in the start menu but maybe the right hand side of my start menu will only show so many programs.
would there be another way to add the Run or another way to find it? maybe i can put run on my desktop.
    thanks in advance,
    John S

I haven't been keeping up with this thread, but I agree with what Hans suggested about dumping Nero.

Your Start Menu graphic is a bit of a mystery - on the right side, I see a little something peeking out at us, as if there's other stuff down there that's just not visible. I can't make that happen on my machine. You might want to try going in to the customize screen and setting the choice to large icons, and a max. of maybe 10 "prior used" programs and see if that does anything.

Failing all else, you might also visit our good friend Kelly at Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP and if you search for "start" you'll see lots of hits. I say "start" because she has some listed as "start button" and others show "start menu." One of interest might be at line number 117 on the left.

Enter the word null in the box, and click OK. Then restart your PC.

Have you changed the settings for your Start menu ?? It looks like you are using the Large Icon setting which can be changed. Right click on your start button and select Properties from the dropdown. On the Start Menu tab click Advanced and on the General tab click on Small Icons. Then on the Advanced tab scroll down the Start Menu Items and be sure the Run command and any other items you want are checked. OK and Apply your way out.

Sometimes Windows seems to get confused on these visual settings. You ought to try selecting Large Icons, OK your way out, & then re-boot. Once the system is back, reset to small icons, OK your way out, & re-boot.
