Quick Time issues (Ultimate)

As most of you know, I'm running Vista Ultimate SP-1, fully up-to-date, etc., etc., ad nauseam.

Anyway..... my wife's machines are all MAC's and as expected, she is using Quick Time Player to view video files. I noticed that the quality of the files watched was noticeably better than on my Windows Media Player. So, against my better judgment, I downloaded the latest version of the free Quick Time Player and installed it. The problem is I can only play audio files but no video files... none whatsoever. I've tried all the file types I currently have, e.g., .wmv, .mpg, and .avi. I even downloaded and installed the Dvix codec as prompted to do from the "official" Quick Time website. Lastly, I even got a BSOD after trying many files. Okay, so what happens when I try to play any of these video files? ... one of 2 things: 1) I get a prompt saying something to the effect that QT can't recognize the file type or 2) the Player actually opens but when I click on the "play" button, the screen is blank (black) although the progress bar indicates something is happening.

I've attached the one prompt which shows that I need to download/install another component to play the .avi file types..... which I did, at least I thought I did although it made no difference whatsoever.

The question should be obvious; What's wrong??

Pilgrim hello,
Under "control panel", hardware and sound/Auto play/ "choose what happens" (for various media) could be that you have "windows" set as default, and won't allow any other players to open? Just a WAG (wild ....guess) don't know. Regards Plain Fred

Re: Quick Time issues (Ultimate) - RESOLVED

Problem solved!

Solution:

1. Restored my system with Acronis True Image.

2. Resolved never to try iTunes or Quick Time again!

3. Downloaded and installed VLC Media Player
