    PCMover

LapLink PCMover is one of the programs I have available for eventual use but have not used yet. This month they posted a newer version, and from the file size and specifications it appears to be a major upgrade. Anyone with the licensed program might be advised to download this latest version if they don't already have it.

Is this the one: Laplink® Software - PCmover - Overview? I had never heard of it before. I'm not gonna take any digging time, but I wonder if it had any "roots" in that Aloha Bob software?

Anyways, if I understand the site, the licensing seems pretty steep, for you only get to use it once. If you need to do it again, you buy another license, huh? Doesn't leave much (any?) room for mistakes or errors, does it?

That's it all right. I thought any number of Loungers might have it as a result of <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> laplink <post:=711,319>post 711,319</post:>. It appears that the Gold Certified Partner status is new, and the file size is a lot larger. As for the price, it depends on how much your time is worth and how much time you have invested in the setup you have (and how happy or otherwise you are with that).

    Re: PCMover

Yeah, you're correct that it could be a very popular item, since we tend to buy or acquire new PCs all the time, AND yes, $50 bucks would be worth it to strap a cable from one machine to another and have it install all my programs on a new computer. But, I would envision all kinds of "gotchas" in that process because of the various protection schemes that publishers use to prevent multiple installations, etc. I look forward to hearing from you and any other Lounger who uses this software to learn about your experience.

I don't want to name any software names here for discretion sake, but I can think of XYZ company whose software cannot run on a second computer unless and until you disable it on the first machine. And I'm talking run-of-the-mill applications, not the operating system. Since the PC Mover writeup says it does not bother the old PC ("PCmover will not overwrite any pre-installed software on your new PC, or alter your old PC in any way.") it's either gonna fail on some software or be akin to "copy protection busting."

It should be interesting to Google this one periodically...
