Merging Folders (Home Premium)

I have the following folder tree:

Folder Top
-------Folder A
-------Folder B
Folder A

So then I decide I will drop Folder A into Folder Top, thereby merging the two Folder A's.

I get asked if I want to merge the folders, and I answer "Yes", then, when a file duplicate is encountered, I am asked if I want to replace the destination copy with the "new copy, and again I answer "Yes -- and in both cases, I selected to "do the same for all items like this one".

All the files get moved but the original folder remains, albeit empty. And, if in fact if the folder being moved had also contained subfolders and files contained therein, all those files would be moved as well, but again, the folders would remain, empty.

Is there some special way to move or merge folders that would do the complete task, rather than leaving the empty folders behind, making a second task necessary?

What happens if you Cut and Paste as opposed to dragging?

You could use Robocopy. Also available is the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> Utility Spotlight: Robocopy GUI.

But isn't there a "built-in" native way to move files and folders, overwriting if so chosen? Moving them would remove all the original, wouldn't it?

<IMG SRC=http://www.the-highway.com/Smileys/Dunno3.gif> To do what you want to do I simply RIGHT-CLICK on the file/folder(s) and drag them to the destination folder and release. I then get a context menu where I can choose MOVE. Then the process completes asking the same prompts about overwriting things, etc., and all is done with no remnants, empty folders, etc. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Often I use the "copy to folder/move to folder" option in Explorer's context menu, which you can get here: Add Copy To / Move To on Windows Vista Right-Click Menu.

I have never had this problem with Vista, it must be one of those addins or tweaks that you did.

Maybe. Kinda hard to be totally sure of since this machine came pre-configured.

I'm half-tempted to get Vista and start over. I figure if I back up the drivers I should have what I need.

This could well be the problem. However, if I log in as Administrator, running no startup programs, I have the same problem.

The only thing I haven't tried as yet is in safe mode.

Guess I'll go give that a shot.

It did the same thing when in Safe mode. So I dunno...

I just wonder if reinstalling will fix it, since I'm not starting with a bare-bones Windows setup, but rather what came on the machine from HP.

After installing the context-menu add-in you suggested, I tried it again, and got the same result.

It moves (or copies) the files, but after asking if I wanted to merge the folders, it still leaves the original folder (or a copy of it) in the original location. And this happens on the desktop or in an explorer window.

From what I'
m hearing here, there appears to be an issue with my install. But if Safe mode gives me the same result, what other (testing) options do I have left to me?
