Changing Windows Product Key (XP Pro SP3)

I've been trying to help somebody out here, without much success. His computer history is:
    1.
Installed XP Pro with SP2 upgrade - June 2006 from CD (which he still has)

Motherboard died and tech installed some fresh copy of XP 2002 (he has no CD for this)

Updated to SP3 using redistributable version
He is being hit with the "not a genuine copy" notice, so I've tried to change his product key back to the original on his CD. This is rejected as being incorrect for the installed version. His legit version was "upgrade". Microsoft phone support were quite aloof and of no help, saying that they would need to know what the tech had installed. Said tech has since gone out of business and is nowhere to be found.

Any ideas of how to get out of the maze?

It will probably end up being easier to backup his data and reinstall using his CD.

This would be a last resort I'm afraid. How would this one go:

    o Uninstall SP3
o Install his 2006 upgrade SP2 over the top of his (now) 2002 XP SP2
o Use his legit CD key
    o Reinstall SP3

I agree with Joe. Not worth the trouble trying to fix.

If the install CD he has is an upgrade CD he can use it to do a clean install if you have a qualifying CD to swap in when asked. XP setup will scan the qualifying CD and instruct you to replace it with the XP CD to continue XP setup. Clean install qualifying media can be any of the following Win NT3.51, 4.0, 2000, Win 95, 98, Me and XP Home when upgrading to XP Pro.

OK, thanks for the links gents. I will give them a shot before embarking on the clean install epic.
