    Custom Dict. (not sure)

    Need an assist...

Does anyone know what would cause the custiom dictionary to put a link on the desktop? Have a freind that uses Notepad and when he does a spell check, he gets a file placed on the desktop. He deletes the file each time, but they reappear.

Looking for answer on cause and fix.

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Can you explain how your friend use spell check in Notepad? I'm asking because the only way I know is to copy all text to Word, and after spell check is complete, copy it back to Notepad. Maybe his procedure to do spell check causing the problem.

I am not sure how he uses the note pad or spell checks it. I have never used the program since everything I do is with MS Word.

I realize this does not give a lot of information, but thought perhaps, someone may have run into to this situation previously.

Just double checked, no spell checker in Notepad. He may be using a third party addin, or he may not be using Notepad. I have also checked Wordpad but no spell checker there either. <img src=/S/shrug.gif border=0 alt=shrug width=39 height=15>

Following is the information I was given...he evidently is in Outlook Express, why he believes the problem is tied to notepad....I am not sure.

". I am not intentionally creating this "custom dictionary" file. When it appears on my desktop, I delete it. Then when I do another spell check it creates a new file, puts it on my desktop, and there is nothing in it. It seems to be tied to notepad and I can't figure out how to keep it off of my desktop. It didn't used to do this and I was hoping to figure out why it is doing it now."

I can spell check in NOTETAB+ but not in NOTEPAD.

One of the NOTETAB options is the location of the dictionary files.

Your friend should check Help|About to confirm which application he is actually using. Also check his Preferences or Options for file locations.

i think he's saying it's tied to notepad via file associations - custom.dic is a notepad file.

i thought there was a KB about this - it wasn't OE but another app that pulled it to the desktop but can't find it online.

I recall from somewhere Netscape having an annoying habit of re-creating custom.dic . . .

Otherwise, try adding an obscure word from various applications where the spell-checker may be used - each time it is recreated check for the addition of the new word in it.
