Phantom message in Outbox (2003 (11.8217 8202) SP3)

I keep getting error message
Task *****- Sending' reported error (0x800CCC78) : 'Unable to send the message. Please verify the e-mail address in your account properties. The server responded: 530 Authentication required'
whenever I send messages.

The message that caused this was deleted so even when the Outbox is empty I get this error.

Any suggestions on how to find and delete the phantom appreciated.

To say I am impressed is putting it mildly, very grateful.

There were four pieces of detritus that I removed and now my Outlook does not irritate me everytime I Send & Receive.

I am an occasional visitor but luckily remembered where the experts hang out!!!
