    Playing a DVD (Vista 32 bit/SP1)

When I attempt to play a DVD using wmp I get garbled sound and garbled image. WMP also hangs. I did set up media center for my screen and speakers and all tested out fine. I downloaded WIN DVD and it worked perfectly in playing a DVD but not WMP 11

    Hi jefny,
    Welcome to the Lounge.
I found these suggestions you may want to try.
    -------------------------------------
First: Control Panel (Classic view) > Device Manager, expand Sound, video and
game controllers, right click the device and select Properties, does it show any
    problems with the device?

If it says "This device is working properly", right click on the Speaker icon in
the Notification Area of the Taskbar, select Playback Devices, right click in
the window and select both "Show Disabled Devices" and "Show Disconnected
Devices". Highlight Speakers, press Properties button, and if there is something
like "Disable all audio enhancements", check that, or uncheck any enhancements
    that are enabled.

    This *might* help.

    Good luck. <img src=/S/crossfingers.gif border=0 alt=crossfingers width=17 height=16>

Thanks for the reply. Going into control panel everything seems to check in fine. No problems with either sound or video devices. I unchecked enabled enhancements but the results are the same. Why does WINDVD work perfectly and wmp not?

What sound card are you using?
Have you checked for latest updates ( drivers and codecs ) from the manufacturer?
Does Device Manager show any problems with your sound card?

    Re: Playing a DVD (Vista 32 bit/SP1)

I have an Nvdia 7300 graphics chip set and sound blaster audigy chip set, both integrated in the mother board. I proceeded to download and install upgrades from Dell and the result was that I lost my sound. I used restore to a period before these installs and I got my sound back. Lo and behold, when I used windows media player it now played the dvd. I can't figure it out but I am now able to play a DVD.

    Thanks for your replies.

    John
