    Blue background, white text (2003)

Does anyone know why the background behind this text is white? If it doesn't show up, trying changing the setting to "Blue background, white text" to see what I mean.

Because the background has been set to white, obviously - in the Shading tab of Format | Borders and Shading... If you set the shading to No Fill, the background will be blue.
You should also set the text color (in Format | Font...) to Automatic, instead of Black.

Thanks Hans. I never realized until now that the background of text could be colored in. I thought you could only highlight the text to make a different colored background (based on one of hte limited 15 colors that Word has available in the Highlight icon.

Shading can be applied to selected text, to entire paragraphs and to table cells, and you can pick any color that you want...
