    Pound sign not visible

Yep, too much time on my hands.

Some month ago I saw some posts in Scuttlebutt, and perhaps elsewhere, and different amounts of money were discussed. In this case the currency was GBP; but instead of the nice pound sign, pound sterling, there was a question mark "?".

I think I have seen this years ago, but don't remember what I did then, and it wasn't in The Lounge anyhow.

Now the fun thing is: if I go and read Jezza's <post:=732,342>post 732,342</post:> in Scuttlebutt it says "... MAXIMUM FINE ?00 FINE ...". But if I do a search for the pound sign in Scuttle, among other in the result I will find Jezza's post. Search letters as usual in bold, but now I find: "... MAXIMUM FINE £1,000 FINE ...".

What is the cause? Not strictly a Lounge question perhaps, but I don't know yet, at least it's about my experience of The Lounge. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Fx 2
I checked the code "thing" but it seems to be on auto and Universal, and thus changing from Windows-1252 to Unicode (UTF-8).

When I follow your link I see the pound (£) character displayed correctly in IE7. Encoding is set to Western European (Windows). I don't think this is a Lounge-specific problem.

    Re: Pound sign not visible

I usually find that Western(ISO-8859-1) gives the best results - but I am forever having to reset it with Firefox. The £ sign has always been a problem for some reason - perhaps we should just convert to the € and be done with it <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

My Fx 3 is also set to the same font as Leif and I can see pound signs OK, Argus. I think it's the default for Firefox, because I don't remember setting it as such. Or maybe it picks up from the local settings on my XP OS, I don't really know.

    Re: Pound sign not visible

    Hans, Leif and Al,
Did log off and did some testing etc. Solution below.
Yes, it's fine in IE7, just checked, but I don't use IE. And no, it is probably not Lounge-specific. Earlier I haven't bothered with encoding and character sets (well, some 15 years ago with e-mail; we do have some odd letters in the Swedish language ..., so I learnt about ISO-8859-1 etc.).

Maybe I remembered wrong before and that I perhaps do have seen the problem in Lounge before. But for a long time it was OK, until some month ago. Problem is the setting jumps around, of course depending on what kind of site, I guess. Aha, solution!

Clean cache etc. and restarted. Tools | Settings [...] Advanced, character Encoding is Western ISO-8859-1, it is as always has been. Same as you show, Al.

    Test:
-Fx starts with a blank page as usual (Unicode UTF-8).
-Lounge, Main index page: Western ISO-8859-1.
    -Scuttlebutt forum: Western ISO-8859-1.
-Click page 4 (with std. 10 subjects per page), then click "Splish Splash (show all)", the thread I mentioned as example. Code: Simplified Chinese; pound sign not there. See screen shot. <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

It seems I have View | Character | Encoding | Auto-Detect | Universal. And then it jumps around if I view encoding as above. But if I set it to View | Character | Encoding | Auto-Detect | (off) it works and stays at 8859-1, as one would expect.

Ah, well, don't know why I have set it like that. Universal shouldn't that be, well, Universal. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Sorry to bother.

    And Leif: don't you abandon that Pound! <img src=/S/razz.gif border=0 alt=razz width=25 height=17> €ew <img src=/S/laugh.gif border=0 alt=laugh width=15 height=15>

Is the current economic climate the best time for that? <img src=/S/yikes.gif border=0 alt=yikes width=15 height=15>
