    Google accounts?

I've been trying the Picasa 3 beta and I wanted to ask a question about it on their suppoort groups. But to do that I have to become a member of the group, and to do that I have to get a Google account. I'm not sure I really want a Google account - what intrusive or irritating features might come along with it? Or is it wholly benign?

I have a Google account, and I've never had unsolicited e-mail or the like from Google.

Registration doesn't seem to pose any problem, but... Does the group (Google Groups, I assume) publish your email address to the world or to other group members? That could be something to be hesitant about. Try to get a feel for it before you post.

    Re: Google accounts?

If I remember correctly, your Google ID is shown in Goggle groups. I started getting a lot of spam after posting some questions sometime back.

I would allocate a temporary 2nd account to post the question and then be prepared to delete it after receiving answers. While Google does an excellent job of isolating spam, it is annoying to log in and see 30, 40 or 50 spam emails that I have to delete.

Perhaps I'll post my Picasa question in the Lounge, and resort to Google groups if I don't find the answer here!

    Re: Google accounts?

I signed up for a Google gmail account a while back, and haven't had a problem with SPAM. Mind you, I turned on the SPAM filtering, and have setup other filters to automatically trash emails relating to certain words or phrases contained in the subject or body.

    Re: Google accounts?

Sounds like a good plan. I have a Google account for a number of features, but none of those publish my Google username (which is akin to one's gmail address) online; if Google Groups (which I haven't used) does that, then it's best avoided or, as suggested, used with a dummy account. It does seem somewhat amiss of Google to use the same usernames and not allow some kind of nickname or pseudonym to be used for public pages.

    Re: Google accounts?

Google Groups displays your username; the e-mail address is shown in an abbreviated form with an ellipsis ... in the middle. To see the full e-mail address, you must click on the ellipsis and solve a captcha (a picture with distorted letters and digits). So it's unlikely that spammers can obtain your Gmail address from post in groups.

I don't even have a Gmail address. Do I need one to sign up for Groups? Give me the Lounge any day!

I don't really know, I've had a Gmail address for years. But you can participate in newsgroups without having a Gmail address.
