    Level 2 Bullet - unual spacing between line 1 & 2 (Word 2003)

    Hi

This is baffling me no end. I have been given a new template which need to be attached to old documents. No problems there except bullets at level 2 are not quite correct - everything else is fine. Let me explain. I attach the new template to old document with 'Automatically update document styles' set. So, when the template is attached, the document styles change. Everything looks OK except Bullet a level 2. It has a spacing between line 1 and line 2. If I create a *new* document using the template then the bullets are correctly formatted.

What also happens is that once I have attached the new template to and old document, any time Iadd a bullet at level 2 it has this funny formatting (a gap between Line 1 and Line 2). The attached screenshot shows what I mean. No manual formatting is performed on any of the bullets.

What happens if you select the paragraph and press Ctrl+Q?

Does the level 2 bullet have a larger font size specified than the text?

    Hi Robie,

What happens if you reset the ListTemplates in the document before applying the new template? ListTemplates sometimes get corrupted, so it may be worth a try.

In the Modify Style dialog for the Bullet 2 style, choose Format > Numbering. On the Bullets and Numbering dialog, make sure the Bulleted tab has focus, then click the Reset button to reset the selected ListTemplate. This will cause your bullets to revert to Microsoft's default for Bullet 2.

Now attach the template as usual. Any change? Maybe?

I agree with Pam's assessment; I think the bullet you have chosen has a larger font size than the text in the paragraph. Have a look at the font size definition of the bullet you are using. You should be able to find a different character (possibly in a different typeface) that looks the same at a font size that matches the text.

When you attach a template to a document then the styles do not get updated UNLESS you also tick the option to Update the Styles. If you have updated the styles from the template then it SHOULD give you bullets the same as the template. You should remember to turn this setting off again though. An alternative to update the styles from the attached template is to run one line of code.

Edited to correct the point size to exactly 15 points.

I notice that your line spacing is _at least 15pt._ Is it possible that a character in the line, perhaps the bullet, is more than 9 pts? That could account for the extra spacing.

The simple solution might be to set the line spacing at exactly 15 pts.

    Re: Level 2 Bullet - unual spacing between line 1 & 2 (Word 2003)

Thanks for all your responses. Sorry, just got into the office.

Hans: Ctrl-Q put the bullet at level 1 (but adding another bullet setting it to level does exactly the same). Is it possible that there is some hidden settings somewhere (like body text style(s), etc) that isn't quite correct? The original document/template was created using WORD97 and this new template is created using WORD2003. I thought that attaching a new template and updating styles should have been enough overewrite any other previsous styles etc.

Pam/Andrew: No the size of the bullet is not large. In a brand new document the bullets are fine (as shown in the attachment)

KMurdock: Yet to try your change. Will let you know how I get on.

Can you post enough of a Word document that we can investigate this in Word, it is quite difficult to understand what is happening from screen shots. You can replace all the text with nonsense and hopefully one page will be enough to show the problem.

    Re: Level 2 Bullet - unual spacing between line 1 & 2 (Word 2003)

Thanks for the response Stuart. OK. I have attached two docs each with same output & only 1 page.

First the problem doc and second a new doc (created from scratch). I then copied the output from 'new doc' to 'problem doc' and as you can there is a difference. I also tried opposite, i.e. copy stuff from problem doc to a newly created doc and the result is same.

My feeling is that sime old style/setting is left in from prevuious template. Unfortunately, can't quite see what exactly.

    Re: Level 2 Bullet - unual spacing between line 1 & 2 (Word 2003)

I can't find out why the documents behave differently, but I, Pam Caswell and Andrew Lockton have all asked you whether the bullet has a larger font size than the text, and although you denied that, its is: the paragraph is set to Verdana 9 points, but the bullet is Times New Roman 12 points.
If you click to the left of the word Bullet in the problem paragraph, then press the left arrow key, the bullet will be selected. If you then press Ctrl+Space to remove directly applied character formatting, the extra line spacing disappears. But why the new document doesn't exhibit this behavior, I have no idea.
BTW I also looked at compatibility options. One document has custom settings, the other is set for Word 97 <img src=/S/yikes.gif border=0 alt=yikes width=15 height=15> but that is not the cause of the problem

Oh dear. Sorry, Hans but my knowledge is not that great so the denial was that it looked OK to me and I did not set it up myself. Sorry once again.

I will look into what you have suggested and return my comments back. Apologies, if I have led you all a wrong path.
    Thanks.

    Re: Level 2 Bullet - unual spacing between line 1 & 2 (Word 2003)

Thank you Hans and everyone who tried to help me out. I learned quite a bit through this exercise - so thanks again.

I have gone through the new template with a fine tooth comb checking each and evey style - making sure they are all correct fonts (size, type etc). Fortunately, only bullet 1 and 2 needed changing the font size and type to 9 and Verdana from 12 & Times New Roman. With this change everything has worked out well & looks correct. So here I go updating the old docs - 121 at the last count :-( to use the new template.
    Thanks.
