IE 5.0 Not finding Home site (IE 5.0)

IE 5.0 has suddently quit working. After starting I receive the Site Found, Awaiting Response message, but a connection is never made. This started yesterday afternoon after I used the system in the morning. I have reinstalled Office 2000, Windows 2000 and checked the settings and I don't see anything wrong. I used a DSL connection which works fine for the other systems on my little network, but not on this one system. Anyone have any idea what might have caused this?

1. Can you connect to any other sites? - Maybe you don't have internet connection at all.
2. If you can, try to type URL of your home page in the address bar (i.e. www.myhome.com or whatever). - Maybe your home page was moved or renamed.
3. If you get the connection and see your home page,
click Tools | Internet Options, on the General/Home page dialog click the button "Use Current", then "Apply".
Next time you'll start IE it will connect to your home page (in theory, at least.)

Re: IE 5.0 Not finding Home site (IE 5.0)

Thanks for the response. No, I can't connect to any sites. I run Ping on MSN and it times out, but I get decent responses pinging other sites like Google, and Yahoo. I can check email using Outlook and MSN Messenger is working, so I do have connectivity. I tried changing the home page, but it didn't help. My laptop (which I'm using now) uses the same DSL connection, so that is not the problem. My guess is a corrupted setting in IE 5, but so far I can't find it. Thanks again.

I'm confused..

Are you running all of your systems on a home network? Or are you taking the DSL connection and physically connecting it to your other machines?

If it's the first, a network, you may have to do some configuration to make it work, these will be NETWORK settings, not much to do with I.E. (although I would recommend an upgrade to at least 5.5SP1...) You'll need to configure TCP/IP and NETBIEU(sp.?) protocols so that your network will identify a singular internet connection...

I'm not a networking guru, (yet) but I recall software available for sharing a single ISP connection on multiple machines... Winproxy or something... You might take a look at this avenue if nothing crops up here, or consult the networking forum, (while new, someone's got to be taking a look at it...

Re: IE 5.0 Not finding Home site (IE 5.0)

Thanks for the help. This peer-to-peer network has worked for several months, with each system being able to "connect" individually. So, I was able to be on-line with two different computers, through the same DSL modem (via a small hub) at the same time. My problem happened suddenly. I was on-line with my desktop in the morning, and that afternoon it would no longer "connect" to any web page. Yet the other computers on the network continue to work fine (thus, this response).

Same operating systems, etc?

You might try cloning the settings from one to another... something must have changed, the things don't happen themselves, at least, no usually...

I agree (that things don't usually happen themselves). PhotoDraw also quit working, so I think it's about time to reformat and start over. I have everything backed up, but still hate to go through the work.

Re: IE 5.0 Not finding Home site (IE 5.0)

I definitely feel your pain.. At one point, I was 'playing' with my registry on a weekly basis, and re-formatting my system twice a month...

It's doubtful, but i'll ask anyway... Do you have a clone of the system you're having problems with? I mean this in the sense that all hardware is the same on system1 and system2? If so, you can take the HD out of a good system, and put it in the bad one, to rule out any hardware problems with the bad system...

Some basic questions now, Do you have connectivity from one computer to another? I.E. You can transfer files, but cannot connect to the internet?

I can't see a correllation with your network/internet problems and photodraw... This all started happening at the same time? Do you have virus software? Hard to say where to go at this point, i'd re-verify all network settings, and re-install photodraw... only as a last resort should you re-format and start from scratch...

Hope that helps!

Re: IE 5.0 Not finding Home site (IE 5.0)

No, I don't have a clone, yes I do have connectivity between computers. Microsoft Knowledgebase says that my PhotoDraw problem is caused by an odd number of TrueType fonts. I've followed their steps to resolve the problem but it hasn't helped. Yes, I use Norton AntiVirus and it is kept up to date. I have also done severel full system scans and nothing has turned up. I've duplicated the IE setting from my laptop but that didn't resolve the problem, nor did reinstalling Photodraw (several times).
Thanks again for your help...

Re: IE 5.0 Not finding Home site (IE 5.0)

Hi
Having gone through all that, I would suggest that you now upgrade your browser, either to the fairly tried and more-or-less true IE5.5, or the all-new paint-not-yet-dry IE6. I've been using a beta version under Win 2000P for a week or two, and upgraded this morning seamlessly to the consumer version. Its the apian lower limb joints.

Did you try another browser (Netscape Communicator, for example?)
By the way, my Photodraw (version 1) refuses to work under Windows 2000 (memory error messages), but it's working fine under Win98 (I have dual-boot).

Nothing silly like a wild-card has crept into your restricted sites (Tools | Internet Options | Security) ?

Can you open locally saved web-pages?

Leif,
No, the security settings seemed fine, but I did change my security level to medium-low and was able to connect. I am updating to IE 5.5 now and hope this resolves my problem. Thanks for the help.

You might for to you internet temp file folder and delete "index.dat". It may have become missed up. This can happen and when you delete it and restart IE it wil be recreated.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.
