    Prompt when downloading (IE6)

Until recently, when I clicked on a file to download it, a file would pop-up asking me to select the destination path & filename. No longer. The download now starts immediately and sticks it into a folder under my "Temporary Internet Files" . Sometimes (but not always) when it is finished a Windows Explorer window will pop-up showing the file, and I can then move it.

It seems like I had this problem once before, but don't remember how to cure it. I haven't made any recent changes to Internet Options, so I don't know why this started happening.

Assuming that you have Windows XP:

    Start Windows Explorer.
    Select Tools | Folder Options...
    Activate the File Types tab.
Select the extension of the file type you're having problems with.
    Click Advanced...
Tick the check box "Confirm open after download".
    Click OK.
Repeat for other file types (extensions) if necessary.

That option was already checked. But the next time I tried a download, it worked as before! I had done a reboot before checking the option. Perhaps my settings (or profile) had gotten messed-up and then restored upon the reboot. Enough to drive one to drink!

    A reboot is a great cure-all!

    But an excuse to have a drink is always nice... <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Given that I never turn my machine off, I can go along time without a reboot. Back in the old days, you could count on a system crash (or the "blue screen of death") to force a reboot; sort of a built-in "cure-all"!
