Have you or anyone else been into the "BIOS" of this computer?

Have you set to boot from the "CD"?

When in the booting process is the cd needed?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

No one has been in to the BIOS.
Have not set to boot from the CD, but where would I find the setting?
Cd is needed after windows has the icons on the screen but still completing boot up. When I insert the CD it goes to the main menu only. Does not do anything. After I cancel, then process of coming up is finished. Next time I boot it asks for the CD again. ?????

Re: Wants Win 98 CD

Ok, the setting for booting to cd is in the BIOS.

If it is asking for the CD this late in the start up, it is NOT needing the CD to start Windows.

Does Windows Explorer start up? If so it may have been opened to a cd when the machine was shut down and the settings were save on @#$!% down. Once you get the system up and running, do nothing but a normal shut down, NOT a restart. Then after a complete clean shut down, start the machine up. Some times this will clear all of the flacky settings at start.

Hope this helps.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Well I cold and warm booted a number of times. Still shows message of Insert Windows 98 CD. I did notice on the tile of the dialog box it says Microsoft Interactive CD Sampler. Does this help. I assume this is the Windows 98 Update CD, but could it be something else? A sweet mysteries of life!!!

"Microsoft Interactive CD Sampler" is a demo of some of MS's software.

It appears that someone has used this CD and there is an entry in the 'Start up" group to run this CD on start up.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

I am slow to get back to this question. What entry would I look for on the Start up menu list. I hunted around but did not see any reference to interative sampler.

Hi
You need to examine the following files for suspicious lines - open them for editing in Notepad :
config.sys, autoexec.bat, Win.ini (LOAD= and RUN= lines), then from the Start Button, Programs, Start Up group.

You can also find out what else tries to Run at startup by selecting Run from the Start Button and typing MSCONFIG.

Re: Wants Win 98 CD

Sorry..new to postings. This is Windows 98 2nd edition; I thought this was in the subject line.

User put in CD sampler and now when booting up Windows asks for the Interactive CD Sampler. If select from the dialog box OK, then it wants the CD, if cancel it will continue to complete the boot. This now always happens on bootup. An irritation and user wants it to quit.

I will check the Win ini file. Would the Load = or Run = indicate it is looking for the CD Interactive sampler? Do I delete the line or comment it out with semi-colons?

Appreciate your help - greatly.

Re: Wants Win 98 CD

Hi
Sorry you must have answered my first draft, which I posted by mistake. I found your OS.
In Win.ini, I should leave the Load= and Run= there and remove anything that looks odd. Do not remove anything you would expect to Load or Run.
You could do it like this :
Original line
LOAD= menu.exe

converted to
LOAD=
;menu.exe

(Note the semi-colon).
