    Deleting Empty Folders (Home Premium)

In my Documents folder I have *several* folders that were created over the years by software that was installed, but in fact they are empty.

Is there any (easy?) way to go through the Documents folder (and sub-folders) and remove all the empty folders?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Joe:

I may end up doing just that...

My "challenge" here (with that) is that for years I floated along setting up individual folders for all types of things, many of which are now empty, and, in addition, many software vendors feel obligated to set up separate folders in Documents. And then of course are my own reorganization exploits. The result? Tens if not even hundreds of folders that are either of no use any longer or were never used to start with.

    Oh well...

All the more reason for ongoing housekeeping. BTW, you do know that all those folders are not really hurting anything?

Joe, yeah I know I've been a bad boy...

The main reason they annoy is that when you get a bunch of folders, many of which were put there by "some other person", you can't really know if they are empty unless you check each one.

Admittedly, I changed my filing system a couple times, which certainly exacerbated the problem...

Then I suppose you'll either have to make a concerted effort to go through your system and get rid of them or just delete them as you run across them and not worry about it.

*Over the years* is a bit much for Vista, but if this Vista was installed on top of XP you will have a set of entries that cannot be deleted but which will appear to be empty or nearly so.

    Pete:

I got my current machine pre-configured with Vista Home Premium. The (then) My Documents folder I just copied over into the Vista Documents folder. So I didn't install the Vista over the XP, but rather brought over the data folders.

I haven't had any issue deleting so far. I was just trying to save a few steps.

    Chuck

Delete them in small groups and see if there is any effect.
If you have doubts about any, try renaming them for a while to test any negative effects.

I usually rename an "iffy" file or folder with an # sign at the start of the name ( #file.doc ) that way it's easy to spot them later on, rather than relying on memory. <img src=/S/yep.gif border=0 alt=yep width=15 height=15>
