Another Address Book/Contacts question (Outlook 2003)

I currently work for a large multinational that has a Global Address List containing a host of sub-folders for geographical and business-unit subdivisions: the overall list is quite long. I had a problem recently that led me to have to rebuild my PC. I always have a mental block when trying to make my Contacts folder appear with the GAL in the list of addresses when composing new emails, (I do it so infrequently and I find the process somewhat counter-intuitive so find it hard to remember), but I managed to do it quite readily this time around.

The problem is that my Contacts list now appears at the bottom of the overall list, whereas previously it was at the top. If ask Outlook to list addresses in my Contacts folder first, it obliges but if I then want to choose an address from the GAL, there's a lot of scrolling involved to get to the top of the list. Similarly, if I ask it to list the GAL first, it obliges but doesn't change the order the two components appear in the list.

I've looked at all the options I can think of and even (shudder) had a look at the Outlook help file, but I can't find a way to change the order of the components that make up the Address list. As I mentioned, before it was rebuilt, my Contacts list was the first component in the list of addresses with the parent folder of the GAL just underneath it. This is still the case on my colleagues' PCs, but we can't find a way of influencing the order.

    Can anyone shed any light??
    Regards,

    Steve

If I read the last post in Show Contacts above Global Address List correctly, you can't change that, unfortunately.

If true, then that's unfortunate, but also puzzling. As I mentioned in my post, for most of my colleagues, the folders are listed in the way that I want - Contacts first with the GAL parent folder just underneath. The GAL listing is always associated first in the Outlook clients built to our default desktop - it's one of the pre-sets. So everyone would have had the GAL enabled in their profile before their bespoke contents folder. (By the way, I'm assuming we're referring to the Exchange profile here rather than the Windows profile?) And yet, for these Users, (and not for me!) the folders are listed with Contacts first.

    Still scratching my head... <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

    That's correct.

I haven't been able to change the order in my Outlook at work (the GAL is always shown at the top of the dropdown list), and I haven't found any way to change that in Google or the newsgroups...

Mine also lists Outlook Address Book first in the drop-down. (Outlook 2003 / Exchange 2003) Perhaps it's random?? (Or perhaps the secret lies in the sequence of some items in the Registry?)

On my Exchange 2007/Outlook 2007 system & another Outlook 2007 system the Contact lists are first in the drop downs. Also, on two Outlook 2003 system the Contact lists are first. They are all used cached Exchange mode. I don't know if that makes any difference.
