TOC dropping AutoNumbering with Track Changes (Word 2000 (9.0.3821 SR-1))

We use styles with outline numbering to create complex multi-level numbered documents. When generating a TOC with styles, the autonumbers appear as text and all is well. However, when using track changes and applying the style and deleting the lead text in the sentence, the number does not generate in the TOC; track changes used in the entry other than the first word generates the TOC with numbering just fine. Anyone run into this before and have a solution?

Hi, Word Witch. I'm trying to visualize your issue. We don't use your described method but would love to take a crack at it. Could you create a dummy document showing the "after" track changes behavior?

Here's a sample document of the problem. If you delete text from the beginning of any of the sentences and regenerate the TOC, the TOC no longer generates the number on the entry. Seems to be a bug.

It's a beautiful thing... I'll need to play a bit more to get to the whys/wherefores... but

<img src=/S/fanfare.gif border=0 alt=fanfare width=31 height=23>Possible work-around: Track your changes. Before updating the TOC field go to Tools/Track Changes and turn off Highlight Changes on Screen -- run the update and then turn it back on.

Allow me to gripe... why do our bosses insist on an accurate TOC in a redline? Why don't we just Lock the field until we're ready to update it, hmmmm?

Are you updating the TOC by rebuilding it completely or just updating the page numbers?

I can't speak for Word Witch, but I was positioning cursor inside table, pressing F9 and selecting Update Entire Table option.
