    64-Bit Printer Driver

I am using a Vista Ultimate 64-bit Notebook and want to print to my shared Kodak printer, which of course I can't because it's 32-bit. Isn't there a way to get a generic 64-bit printer driver? And if there is, how would I tell it to use that driver whilst printing to the shared printer?

    Thanks.

    Re: 64-Bit Printer Driver

    From here ....

"The print share can be used similar to a file share so the 32bit XP driver does not have to be installed on the 64 bit machine (and the same is true when the "server" is 32bit and the client is 64bit). The reason most people also install the 32bit driver on the 64bit "server" is for the benefit of the 32bit user having to locate the driver and install it.

Yes the 64bit machine must have a 64bit driver to install the printer, I assume you are using the drivers included with Vista.

On the XP machine, create a local printer which uses a Local Port in the form VistamachinenamePrintersharename (change the share name on the 64bit machine so it does not have the spaces in it). Select the Epson 32bit driver for the device."

    Re: 64-Bit Printer Driver

    Doc,
I am a bit confused. When I try to add the printer and tell Vista it is a network printer, it can see the printer, but when I select it I get an error "Windows cannot connect to the printer. Make sure you have typed the name correctly and that the printer is connected to the network. The printer is connected and shared. And I changed it's share name to have no spaces. If I tell Vista to add a local printer and select the Windows Update button, it does find 64-bit drivers for my printer but I'm not sure what good that does me. I tried adding a local printer where I told it the port in the format mentioned but when I selected "Next" it said "Access Denied". I checked the permissions and everything looks ok.... What am I missing?

    Re: 64-Bit Printer Driver

Both machines are Vista. The Desktop is 32-bit and the Notebook is 64-bit. I need to install the printer on the Notebook.

    Re: 64-Bit Printer Driver

When I try to get to the printer from Start (computername) I see the printer. When I select it I get this message:
"Operation could not be completed (error 0x00000709). Make sure that you have typed the name correctly, and that the printer is connected to the network."
I looked up error 709 and it says printer name is invalid. The printer name is KODAK5300AiO. <img src=/S/scratch.gif border=0 alt=scratch width=25 height=29>
One more thing, I can see the printer but it isn't in the printer folder as suggested by your link. Does that mean it isn't shared even though printer sharing is on, and password sharing is off?

Are the 64 bit drivers and the 32 bit drivers installed on both machines ??

Please explain what you mean when you say "When I try to get to the printer from Start (computername) I see the printer". Where are you looking and where and how do you see it ?? A screenshot might be helpful. If it isn't in the printer folder (on the laptop ??), then it is probably not installed on that computer and would, of course, not be receiving data from that system.

    Re: 64-Bit Printer Driver

Doc, I finally "solved" the printer problem. After spending a couple of days on the problem, I used all of my technical skills, and bought a wireless printer!!! <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15> Now all my PCs can see/use it. Thanks for your help.

    Doc,
I found the following that explains why I couldn't get printer sharing to work - well, it explains that it is a known issue. So at least now I feel vindicated. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
