    RAM Speed?

I needed to upgrade a Dell PowerEdge PC to WinXP Pro, from Win2K. Machine only had 128MB of RAM, so I checked the Crucial web scanner to see what I needed to get. Crucial said I needed either PC2700 or PC3200 RAM. I happened to have 2 256MB sticks of PC2100 RAM laying around, so I pulled the existing stick and installed them. XP install ran fine, PC has been up and running all day without a problem. Aside from a performance "hit", is there any reason the PC2100 RAM shouldn't be OK?

Speed is the only difference, so you should be OK.

If you tend to run multiple applications simultaneously, XP definitely would benefit from a memory boost up to 1GB. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>

I've been trying to set XP and 1GB as the base level on all the PC's in the business this PC belongs to. This was the only one left running an OS other than XP, so now I have it and one existing XP machine to bump up to 1GB and I'll have all the PC's where I want them (for now <grin>).

Crucial only supplies PC2700 and PC3200 RAM now, since PC2100 is obsolete.

I'm looking to replace two 256 MB PC2100 (133 MHz) SODIMMs in a laptop, and have sent their Technical Support and email to ask whether a couple of these will do the job. If not, I have found a supplier of what looks to be closer - it has all the right CAS numbers. (I suspect it is 'old stock'.)
