Photo Stitching Software

About a month ago, <!profile=JoePerez>JoePerez<!/profile> mentioned Microsoft Research Image Composite Editor (ICE) in one of the Windows boards and I wanted to repeat it here in order to ask if anyone has any other favorite photo stitching software they would mention. This is probably a rarely used function for most of us, so ease of use gets to be pretty important. A couple of years ago (I think) I tried the free demo of AutoStitch for a project I was working on and it turned out pretty well. I've only tried the ICE program once so far and am having difficulty getting it to do what I want. I have 4 images and it wants to use only 3 for some reason.

Anyway, here's a collection thread for "stitching" software if you've got any that you'd like to mention. BTW, Joe's thread ( <post:=734,665>post 734,665</post:> ) includes a couple of fabulous shots by <!profile=IanWilson>IanWilson<!/profile> so I know ICE will do the job!

You can also check out another tool from the Microsoft Labs - Photosynth : Microsoft Live Labs.

    Hi Al,

We use PhotoStitch from Canon frequently. If you have a Canon camera, the software was on the CD. This link takes you to a free download.

Thanks for that, Johanna. I've seen mention of the Canon software and the fact that they have included it with their cameras for some time!

    Al

Thanks for being so kind about my first attempts at stitching with Microsoft ICE. You might like to see this one, of the Qutub Minar in Delhi, taken a couple of weeks ago, which shows that ICE can stitch vertically as well as horizontally.

    Re: Photo Stitching Software

    Hello Ian,

I meant to comment when I first saw your first example of stitched images with MS ICE in that other thread; what a nice first attempt and a nice photo of Bristol, but somehow I lost track of the thread.

Just as an inspiration, perhaps, here is a page with some really nice pictures and links to lots of more information; the US photographer Max Lyons Digital Image Gallery (High Resolution Digital Images and Stitched High Resolution Images). He created the first manually(!) constructed gigapixel image in 2003. NEWS! - COOL: Max Lyons and the 1 gigapixel panorama (at Imaging Resource).

He also mentions really powerful panoramic image stitching software and has developed helper software for that one (PTAssembler) and has made a nice "Beginner's Guide" to that software, among other things; the site also links to his TawbaWare's homepage with some picture and file tools and lots of more info.

A little search gives this article at BBC, that you all maybe remember from the time, which talks about a Dutch World record in 2004 with an automated technique, however it also mentions Max Lyons' image.

He really does have some great pictures there! I'm glad not to be doing it by hand though!

This was one more from my recent visit to India, in the fort at Gwalior, done with ICE.

Nice bit of software, I had a composite of the church of Catania at Piazza del Duomo, Siracuso, Sicily. Very clever

If I remember rightly, it was about 35 degrees topping 40 on one day, to hot for Archimedes
