I can't download my email to OE (Windows XP)

I get my emails through Comcast and have OE set up to download the messages from the Comcast server. All the sudden this morning I find that OE will not retrieve my email from Webmail. What it says is:

"The connection to the server has failed. Account: 'Advocacy Groups', Server: 'mail.comcast.net', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 10061, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

It says this with each of my 4 or 5 accounts. I tried setting the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) to 587 and telling OE that My Server Requires Authentication to no avail. Any suggestions?

If the problem persists after restarting your PC, there might well be a problem on the Comcast side. I'd wait a few hours and try again.

In addition to Hans' suggestion, I would also adjust your settings to the originals. If it is a simple problem (the server being down), your new settings will probably not work when the server comes back up.

I also use Comcast and the problem you are having is very common with Comcast. The servers are either overloaded or down temporarily. Make sure your POP3 & SMTP settings are as they were before the problem started and, as suggested, wait an hour or so & try again. If no joy in a couple hours, call comcast support.

You were right. I rebooted my computer and the issue fixed itself. Thanks.

I had the same problem when I try to retrieve my mail this morning. I called Comcast and was informed that it was an internal system problem and would be corrected as fast as the techs could find the problem.

Sure enough in about 15 minutes, I heard my email servers message "You have mail." and my email downloaded. The mail that Mail Washer informed me was there was lost however, never to be seen again. I only got the mail that arrived after the problem was corrected.
