    splitting/zipping .bkf file (XP-SP3)

    Hello. Can the resulting .bkf file from a Windows XP- home Edition backup be zipped and/or split so the .bkf file can be stored on CDs? (My .bkf file is 7,877,950 KB)

    Did you mean KBs, because my maths makes your file about 7.5 GB! About 12 CDs?

    I would be surprised whether zipping it did much more compression, since a BKF file is already fairly well compressed.

    Having backed up, what were you thinking of restoring?

    Hello and thanks for the reply. The BKF file that I currently have on a removable drive is 7,877,950 KB. It is a backup for a restore in case the C drive fails. I would like to put the BKF file on CDs. I am not experienced with splitting files. I do not know if splitting the BKF file would still allow it to be used for a restore.

    The file could be split - either immediately (using e.g. HJSplit http://www.freebyte.com )
    or almost any zip utility (don't compress just "store") -these use the terminology of either "split" or "span".
    However, you would need to join the files again before you could perform the restore.
