Did you intend to attach a picture or file?

hosts file error (vista home premium SP1 (x64))

Whenever I lose my internet connection and I run Messenger Connection Trouble shooter I get the attached host file error listed amongst errors for the broken internet connection. There are no Messenger related entries in my hosts file and live messenger, in any case, doesn't seem to clean up the file as the error repeats itself. Other than the annoyance of the error it does not seem to have any other effect. Any suggestions on how I might eliminate this error poping up?

Attached is a copy of the hosts file I am currently using (I have tried abbreviate versions of the same file without eliminating the error)...

I don't recognize the entry with ::1, I'd remove that line from your Hosts file (unless someone else can explain what it means).

I think that ::1 is the IPV6 localhost address. See for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hosts_file and http://linuxreviews.org/features/ipv6/using_ip/.

In any case, I deleted the line in question but the hosts file error only seems to occur when I run the Messenger Connection Troubleshooter and the connection is open now. I'll give it a try when the connection is broken again (however, I have eliminated this line before and it didn't seem to have any effect) and get back as to the results of running the troubleshooter (which shouldn't be too long as is is raining in Beirut and the network is down frequently!).
If anyone has any other ideas as to the problem let me know as I doubt eliminating the line will solve the problem....

There is nothing wrong with the Hosts file, it contains only a small number of perfectly normal entries, so I think it's some kind of false positive.

Thanks for the prompt response...you are probably right as the error does not seem to have any effect on the computer functions........I'll see how it works with the line in question eliminated the next time the next work goes down...

Maybe I'm being dense, but what is the error that you are getting? Does it just list the hosts file? Is there some error text?

Re: hosts file error (vista home premium SP1 (x64)

When my internet connection is broken I run Messenger Connection Troubleshooter and there is a yellow triangle exclamation mark on Hosts FIle which is followed by the error message I attached lo my first message. At the same time there are the same triangular emblems for DNS error and another network error (the latter two are the usual errors when the network goes down ... which is fairly frequent during the winter)....the Hosts File has just recently started to surface...more annoying than anything as it doesn't seem to have an effect and I only see it when running the Messenger Connection Troubleshooter....

Again, I don't see any error message only a listing of the hosts file. Is there an additional message about the hosts file?

Your hosts file doesn't contain entries related to Windows Live Messenger, so the error message is in error. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Unfortunately I don't know how to get rid of it. Perhaps you should contact Microsoft.
