Is it safe to update to SP3? (Windows XP- SP3)

Is it fairly safe to update to SP3. I know the great guru, was somewhat opposed to it. Has he changed his mind on this update?

If the "great guru" means our Woody, I'm embarrassed to say I don't know what he's saying these days - I haven't had time to go over to his place and check 'em out. BUT, I can tell you that the VAST majority of us here in The Lounge have installed SP3 without incident. I'd go for it and get caught up, especially in light of more recent "news" postings about security!

Thanks for the info---a couple of more questions----Is downloading SP3 through the windows update feature less of a hazzle than installing it from a downloaded file? Such as; do the same precautions need to be observed, or will the update program observe the precautions and warn you of any problems encountered?

I have installed SP3 at home and on several computers at work through Windows Update and I didn't encounter any problems. For a single PC it's the easiest way.

If you want to install SP3 on more than one computer or may have to reinstall it on one computer in the future, it probably pays to download the installation file and burn it to CD or DVD. See Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 Network Installation Package for IT Professionals and Developers or Download details: Windows XP Service Pack 3 - ISO-9660 CD Image File.

That depends quite a bit on your system. Most likely it will be 30 minutes to an hour - install time after the download is complete.
