    java problem (Vista Ultimate Sp1)

I received an error message saying that there was a problem loading the Java applet, please reinstall or update or something to that effect.
OK, so I went to the Sun website and it said that the latest version was JRE 1.6.0.10. I download it and go to run or update it and I get the message that this was already installed on this computer, do I want to reinstall it?
I click yes and it comes up with, this only applies to to versions that are currently installed.

So what is it? First it says it is already installed, then it says it only applies to currently installed versions!

I run the UNinstall wizard and it shows that Java is GONE.
Run the install download and I go through the same bit. Says it still currently installed. Blah, blah.

Now I can't update or do anything more with Java?

Have you saved the instalation file then re-booted and tried again? Have you searched the registry for Java related entries?

    Joe,
I did try the reboot and reinstall attempt a couple of times.
I also reinstalled the latest ( ver 4.5, I think it was ) Windows installer package, same thing,

I haven't yet gone into the reg but I suppose that's the next step.

See How do I uninstall Java on my Windows machine? - 1.5.0, 6.0. It says to use the Microsoft Installer Cleanup utility if the normal uninstall fails. See Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility for a link to download it.

That "Windows Installer Cleanup Utility" is the berries..... used it a couple of times to remove an orphaned item from the Add and Remove Programs list which did not appear in the Registry nor anywhere else. It worked great. I now keep a copy on my thumbdrive as part of my "toolbox". <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

    Joe, and Jeff,
I did try Windows Installer Cleanup ( I've had that around for a while now and have use it successfully in the past ) but NOT this time around.

Despite "uninstalling" it and searching for and deleting any Java folders in Windows Explorer, It STILL insists that I have Java installed and won't even let me update it.

I still haven't gone exploring in the reg yet but that will be my project for today.

Re: java problem (Vista Ultimate Sp1)

    GOOD news to report!
After trying all of the usual methods to uninstall andor update Java, I finally went into the reg and searched for any mention of Java.
Found 9 of them and deleted them all. I ran the java update file that I had from before this and it ran and installed successfully!
Went to the Sun site and it verified Java was up to date and installed OK.

So, thanks for all of your help everyone. Case Closed!

    >>Took you long enough

Yeah, getting technically lazy these days.
Beautiful fall day here. Went for a great walk along the local ocean beach. Checking out the harbor seals and gulls. Hypnotic sort of feeling watching the surf roll in and all. Clears out the cobwebs in the gray matter.

Finally got back to the problem at hand and viola, all is well in Vista land! <img src=/S/cool.gif border=0 alt=cool width=15 height=15>
