Need Formula Help (Excel 2003 SP3)

I have a worksheet with entries in columns AN through GI. The columns have different headings in row 8, but some headings, such as "Distributions," are duplicated at various intervals. Each row thereunder is for a different date, and the information entered in each of the columns is either a date, a number, or "-----".

I want a sum of the numbers in each row that fall under the column heading "Distributions." I cannot use a formula such as AN10+AT10+BJ10+FR10 and so on because some columns contain a "-----" entry and the formula returns a #VALUE! error.

What formula can I use to obtain the desired result?

    Thanks,
    Robert

One option is to use SUM, for SUM ignores text values:

    =SUM(AN10,AT10,BJ10,FR10)

Another option is to use SUMIF. Assuming that the column headings are in row 1:

    =SUMIF(AN$1:GI$1,"Distributions",AN10:GI10)

This will add the numeric values in AN10:GI10 for which the corresponding column heading in row 1 is Distributions.

    Thanks, Hans.
The SUMIF function is what I need, and it works like a charm. I should have known that, but I was all stressed out and for the life of me I could not get anything to work correctly.
    Thanks, again. Robert
