Autoplay for USB thumbdrive (Ultimate)

The Autoplay feature no longer works for my OCZ thumbdrive. The relevant service is running, and the "Mixed Content" in Autoplay configuration is set to "Open folder to view files in Windows Explorer" which applies to the drive's contents. Any suggestions for a fix? The last time I plugged it in all was working fine. Nothing unusual has been done or programs added that would effect this feature, as far as I know.

    THANKS!

Have you tried disabling the Autoplay, re-boot, then re-enable Autoplay?

Is your system up-to-date with patches? Are you running sp-1?

Also, see How to correct "disable Autorun registry key" enforcement in Windows for information on registry settings.

Yes to both, Joe. Again, this problem began just recently. It has always worked fine until now.

Have you tried a System Restore to a time when it was working? If you check the registry and there is not an issue with Autoplay being disabled, you culd try using Device Manager and deleteing the USB root hub. Then re-boot, Windows should find the device and set it up. That may re-initialize all the device settings.

    RESOLVED

    Joe,

Thanks for all your time and expert advice. The issue, however, has been resolved after reading through Mark Russinovich's blog item: The Case of the Missing Autoplay.

HOW that Registry entry got set to "255" (disable autoplay for all devices) is beyond me. At this point, I really don't care since it is now working as it should again.

Wow Jeff, that's really an obscure one and I don't know how you found the answer but I'm glad you did. Do you use that drive on XP as well? I saw in the comments that the "0" might not be the correct setting for XP, so I couldn't help but wonder... ( The NoDriveTypeAutoRun subkey value is reset to the original default value )

    Re: RESOLVED

    BigAl,

Yes, I use the same thumbdrive on my XP system without issue. The problem was ONLY on my Vista system.

I'm not sure what would be "correct" if it had happened on my XP system, but reading through the link you provided, it seems that applied to a very specific and unusual situation "You add the computer to an Active Directory domain." and only in regard to XP Pro in that situation. The way I read it, it didn't apply to anything that I was experiencing and to be honest, I don't know what the article was really addressing.
