    Locked out

Can anyone tell me where the power-on password would be buried in a backup? I have locked myself out of a Dell Dimension 8200 with XP Pro SR-2 which has been in mothballs for over seven months. I have forgotten the password and canít find a record of it, and I do not have a password rescue disk.

I donít think it had a password prior to the last-minute addition, and I have full Acronis 10 backups which would allow me to perform a full restore, or preferably a compare that would let me remove the forgotten password if I know what to look for. Alternatively, I would like to perform a partial restore so as not to lose significant new material added since the latest backup.

I also recall that with some computers there is a jumper, if you know what I mean.

Do you mean "power-on" the machine or get into windows?

If you mean the machine, you can clear a master password by shorting the CMOS jumper and then resetting the CMOS.

If you mean Windows, then there are many programs that will help you (some free). Use this Google search:

Thank you very much. You hit the nail on the head with both counts, and in my case it is the login to Windows that applies, and your link is proving invaluable.

I downloaded a number of the promising-looking utilities but then (re-) discovered my ace-in-the-hole. I had a hand-printed record of the Administrator Password (which I would never have remembered in a million years) all along, and that saved the day. I think it taught me a lesson in the bargain.
