    Embed linked text? (Word 2007)

    I'd like to have some text embedded in a Word document. That text well come from another original document, and when the original document changes, I'd like the embedded text to change automatically. I've found how to embed Excel worksheets and Powerpoint slides, but I can't find any way to do this with text. Anyone know how to do this?

    Thanks,

    What is the source of the text? Assuming it is a file, rather than a database or other tricky source, you could try the INCLUDETEXT field code. It will not update when the Word document is closed, but can be triggered to update when the file is opened.

    Thanks for the reply.

    I can't seem to get this to work.

    I typed this into the document

    { INCLUDETEXT D:V filesDesktopsource.doc }

    and saved and re-opened the document. All I have is that line, no text. I tried pressing alt-F9 did not help.

    I'm using Office 2007.

    Is there a way to do it using Insert/Object? I can only get that to insert a new Word doc, not an existing one.

    Thanks

    In Word 2003 you do this from Insert > Object > Create from file, and according to this article the same method works in Word 2007.

    When you say you typed it... hmmm... did you create the field code first by pressing <code>Ctrl+F9</code>? This creates the "magic" brackets, which you cannot emulate by typing the bracket characters on the keyboard.

    If that doesn't work, you could use the old Insert Field dialog. I don't see it on the ribbon, but you can press this key combination to call it up: <code>Alt+i f</code> (the fact that Word 2003 menu items can sometimes be accessed this way, and sometimes not, is one of my frustrations in switching between the two).

    jscher,
    Yes you are correct. I was not creating the magic brackets. The MS page seems to have left that step out. I've never worked with fields, so I was bumbling my way through.

    Stuart,
    The technique on the page you referred me to worked nicely for me.

    Thanks to both of you.

    Hi Vincenzo,

    You need to create the field brace pair (ie '{}') via Ctrl-F9.

    Also, your field code syntax was incorrect - it should be
    { INCLUDETEXT "Desktopsource.doc" }
    The quotes in the field code are especially important if there are any spaces in the path or filename.

    If, after inputting the field code correctly, pressing F9 doesn't change the display, try toggling it with Alt-F9.
    Cheers,
